When I am not jamming out the Zone @ 91-3 I do enjoy me some CBC Radio One.  Today they had these guys from a website called Strike TV on the program.  Strike TV is place for writers in Hollywood to tryout some ideas on the internet.  One of my favourites was a show called “House Poor” starring the chick that plays “Kelly” on The Office.  Too funny.

***

I wanted to share some recent downloads with you.

A band I am quickly turning into a bit of a fan of, is a group based out of Montreal called Contrived.   Members of Wintersleep and Holy Fuck.  Wintersleep is great and we play them lots on the Zone, but Holy Fuck?!?  Yeah, the track “Lovely Allen” is a killer song.  These two dreamy Canadian popsters teaming up can only spell good.
Check out the airy jangle on the track “Keepsake.”

and if you don’t know Holy Fuck… here is my fave song.

yeah, that’s good.

Another record I wanted to check out was a band called Ashes Divide.  By my understanding, this is a one of from the dude that brought us A Perfect Circle.  At first I wasn’t completely sold on this disc… but I find, as i work away I constantly go, “hmmm what is that?” and look on my computer to find that it is an Ashes Divide song.

Check out the video for a song called “The Stone.”  Yeah, it ain’t no APC but until Maynard and Billy get off their asses for some new music, this will serve.

Glasvegas is a band starting to gain major traction on The Zone.  This Scottish group consists of a couple brothers (at least I think they’re brothers).

Watch the video for Geraldine.

The Midway State is a band out of Toronto that I like, in the same way I secretly like the Fray.  Piano pop-rock.  I am a sucker for this type of shit.

Ok, I have some more to write, but my computer is such a piece of shit that I want to throw it off a canyon and into a fast moving river full of sediments.  So that is all for now.  I’ll continue I hope, tomorrow from a work computer.

I do hope to get a new computer, but sadly that will need to be a Spring project as our monies are all tied up till then.

Go with yourself.

Coral and I finally got to putting up our Christmas Tree.  Its a lot of work, putting up Christmas Trees.  But in the end, I feel so much better having done it.  I think I’ll keep it p till January 7th… which is like Ukrainian Christmas I think.

Our home is now very festive, until tomorrow when Madelyn wakes up and RAMPAGES everything.

o rly? Coral.

I was not feeling a blog at all after all the work.  Coral and I somehow got on watching Los Angeles  news which was mega depressing.  We flipped it over to A, and it was almost as depressing, except nearer to us, so back to KTLA it went.  I think the CBC is the only station that manages to be serious and less scary.

So now I am typing away, my computer is as slow as shit.  James is coming over on Thursday so hopefully we can track down what is bogging it down so savagely.  I have not been into writing lately, I read other people’s blogs and they are so good.  The ladies I read put WAY more “out there” into internet land.  They share.  Crazy fights, feelings, relationships, drama…you will find it all on someone’s personal blog.  My blog, less so… I just jibber jabber and things.

I was thinking about this the other day.  There has been another round of babyitis infecting the Zone office building.  A few staffers have made the announcement that they expecting kids.  Very exciting, got me thinking back to when Coral and I were expecting Madelyn.  People were sharing their birth stories with us and it would inevitably go something like, “Oh wow, you’re pregnant, let me tell you about our first child!  Man, I’ll tell you, I was in labour for thrity-seven hours.  All my women bits where tearing and bleeding… the doctors would give me no pain killers.  They were amazed I could withstand so much excruiatingly violent pains, they said a man would have passed out hours ago.  But not me, I felt it all.  So the forty hours dragged on, oh did I say thirty-seven earlier?  it was forty.  Forty-two hours of labour, my child came, she was born backwards and with spikes.  The doctor said it was the most painful way to come.  Doctor?  heck no, the doctor was sick, I actually delivered the baby myself.  Lost a lot blood.  Oh man, kids are special, I am so excited for you!”

and then, you sit there all pale and meekly thank them for sharing their joyous birth story with you.

Did I mention my computer was as slow as shit?

All I tell Dad’s to be is, pack some food.  And leave as soon as your girl passes out.  Go home and have a shower and brush your teeth, then on your way back to VGH, stop at the drive-thru and get your girl an epic burger.  She earned it.

We got to dream up our annual top 10 list at the Zone of our favourite records and this year will be a challenge.  I do have some favourites but to be honest, I don’t really have ten STAND outs.

Hmm, I remember listening to a lot of Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Beck, and RadioheadMGMT on my walk to work.  Plants and Animals was good.  Fleet Foxes sometimes.  hmm, right.  Does Akon count?

Casey-Jo sent me some clips from A TV when Eric from the morning show put my picture on the TV last week.  After Movember.  I fired it up on the Youtube.

Now right at the end he sorta has a laugh… hmmm?  And he showed me on TV during some witching hour when no one watches… hmmm indeed.  Does he have no respect for the sash?  I had my operatives at A track down Eric’s cell phone so maybe I’ll call him tomorrow on the show.

Anyways, thank you Casey-Jo for taking the time to send me some clips.

Time for a tub and some book read’n.  Go with yourself.

Oh, riiiight, Casey-Jo also sent me this wonderous track.

Mongol was pretty good.  Tells the story of Genghis Khan in his early life.  Follows him as a boy that kinda gets the short end of the stick.  Then as a young man fighting to first regain his freedom, and later to rescue his wife, and later still he fights for freedom (he gets captured again and put in a Zoo… SWA?).  then he unites all the Mongols into a glorious fighting forces and heads West to Russia.  End of epic film.

Part 2 is supposed to come out in 2010.  hmmm, Olympics or Genghis Khan laying into some Christian Knights?

The thing with the movie that sorta irked me is, how come Genghis Khan was such a rad warrior.  When I watched Batman, it made sense… Christian Bale goes off to some secret monastery of shadowy ninjas and beats the shit out of Liam Neeson and swims in ice water.

Granted, Genghis Khan did swim in ice water and live… but the fighting doesn’t make sense.  In the early part of the story, he is little more than a slave or hobo.  Then they fast forward and he’s Heath Ledger in a Knight’s Tale.  They don’t connect the lines.

i-demand-an-explanation

Oh man… I just watched the Knight’s Tale trailer again and it brought the LOLz.

mmm, I am drinking Rum and Eggnog right now.

I want to write more, but I also want to enjoy a rum and eggnog more.

I am getting in the festive spirit.  I meant to go down into storage and pull out the tree and lights… but I am thinking that I will need to map out the logistics better first.  Miss Monster will rampage everything if this not planned very carefully.

The family and I went to the lower mainland for some family parties and Christmasness.  My Mom turned fifty something (fifty-one seems to ring a bell) so Madelyn wanted to come over and celebrate.  We watched Wall E.  What a neat movie.  I have been reading some pretty heavy blogs today… people’s spirits are down.  I recommend a Rum and Eggnog and the movie Wall E.

I got a call on the Zone phone today from some guy completely outraged that I went on the radio yesterday saying I wasn’t so jazzed on the new Guns N Roses. I don’t think he is a regular listener of the show.  He had “heard” through the grapevine that I had “slammed” G ‘n R so this knight had risen to the challenge to defend Axl’s honour and tell me off.  Turns out my head needs to be “shaked” because it wasn’t clear to me that Chinese Democracy was the “BEST record of the last few years.”  O RLY? He got many facts wrong and we talked it out… I think its all good now.  Maybe its good that people talk about my show with their friends, but getting the facts so off… yikes, I don’t think they were saying nice things about my show.  So I guess they are forgiven for never finding the blog either… then they’d know, I am trying to like G ‘n R and I am an odyssey of discovery.  I downloaded “Better” today.  Kinda good.

One good song on the new G n’ R record… to me that is a triumph as I expected zero.

Turns out Burrito Pie from yesterday was ganked from Mr. Lady.

At first I didn’t know what that is (well, other than who Jimmy James made out with one time on a drunken night in Vancouver).

Turns out it is a Mommy blog?  or a Daddy blog?  I dunno, other than Coral reads this person’s blog and then I was all… “oh right, I recognize it.”

Burrito Pie was delicious last night.  A triumph.  So Mr. Lady, you might not have your gender figured out but your cooking is A-O-K.

Twilight continues to dominate the world and soak movie theatre seats across the movieland.  Tween Heartthrob Robert Pattinson was on Jay Leno last night and Corj and I checked it out.  How wonderfully awkward.  I think I want to be a movie star.  I am a fairly fugly dude that can barely act with no proven resume of success.  I think I need more jaw and less moustache.

Corj and I laughed and laughed and then watched Seal perform… and then really laughed.  So Pattinson… you’re alright.  Such a hippy that was never meant for worldwide fame.  He does a lot of drugs. a lot.

Here is a picture of me looking like a vampire.

whoa ladies, back up… this vampire is taken!

In other Twilighty type news,  Robert Pattinson does the folk singer thing (which I think the man is far more suited to) and he has teamed up with a singer/folky type from Vancouver named Sam Bradley.  On New Year’s Eve, Mr. Bradley will be perforing in North Vancouver and Corj and I were thinking of going.  Perhaps you fine Mainlander types that are as equally obsessed with Twilight as my lovely finacee will want to do a field trip with us.

I answered another question today in regards to the municipal election going down this Saturday.

From: SM

Subject: Esquimalt town council question

Good day Jeremy,

I listen to the zone….you rock……

On a more political note.  I would love to vote for a councilman who has a crime and drug reducing idea that will actually work. It states in you blog (which by the way needs to be looked at and spelling errors corrected) you touch on police force amalgamation and that is a good position to stand, but it doesn’t give the people a statement that something must be done.  Esquimalt has been my home since 2002 (and will remain my home as it has the small town community mentality). But, The crime rate in the Esquimalt area does not seem to be improving.  The drug houses and apartments located by the Carlton, Cambie and Bingo Hall remain untouched and this will make it more inviting to drug-abusers and harder on making your ideas of a more touristy Esquimalt come true. Something must be done about the crime and drug aspect of our beautiful area.

On a lighter note I totally agree with the later bus routes policy you have. That will make life easier for everyone. To add to that, what about the western community people? There is only one bus with a horrible schedule that has a direct route to Langford and western exchange.

I would love to hear back from you regarding the ability to move people to the western communities. Also, if you want my vote let me know what you are going to do about the drug abuse and crime here in Esquimalt. This aspect of Esquimalt life is getting overlooked and becoming a HUGE boil that is the silky smooth ass of Esquimalt.

Zone rocks.

***

Good evening Mr. M,
Thank for rocking the Zone and listening to my show.

That said, lets get down to the business of municipal policing.

On my website I stated I supported the amalgamation of police services for the four core municipalities.  I believe this is a good idea because it will share the costs more evenly over a greater population.  When the Province forced the amalgamation with Victoria back in the early 2000s, it was believed that the other forces would be amalgamated as well.  That has not yet happened and Esquimalt’s policing costs have doubled since.  Our costs are also considerably more than Oak Bay.  A town with a similar population.

This report by the Victoria Chamber of Commerce makes the case for amalgamation of police forces. http://www.victoriachamber.ca/img/content/Policies/11.pdf

The crime rate in Esquimalt has (generally) improved.  It is the perception of police response times that has not.  As a town councilor I would push to have our police station manned 24/7.  It is currently only available during bank hours.  Not acceptable even for banks, let alone the police!  I would also try to make greater use of auxiliary and volunteer police services to try and improve the visibility of police in the community.

http://www.bclocalnews.com/vancouver_island_south/victorianews/community/30533374.html

I would agree that being a neighbour to a drug house would be a challenge. I lived in Fernwood for years before moving to Esquimalt and understand that there are many problem associated with that.  The township has begun and shown some success with the Crime Free Multi-Housing program.  This program has Victoria Police work with the owners and mangers of rental properties to increase security and training to recognize problems.

http://www.crime-free-association.org/multi-housing.htm

http://www.esquimalt.ca/files/PDF/Publications/EsquimaltCurrentJune2008.pdf

My wish list for transit would include greater late night service to the downtown core to facilitate safe transportation to a fun night out and give Victoria residents access to Esquimalt’s pubs and nightclub.  Esquimalt is uniquely situated between the downtown engine of the region and the growing suburbs of Colwood and Langford.  I would support increased bus connections to Langford but I think more importantly, getting the E&N Railway online as a light commuter rail service.  As well as connecting Esquimalt by bike path/trail to the galloping goose.

http://www.ourcorridor.ca/

Tackling drug abuse is an epic challenge that I personally would not be able to single handedly solve.  Saying nope to dope is something that starts with good parenting and education.  People that have valuable lives and connections to their community would be less likely to risk that on drugs.  I have worked briefly in foster care and know that managing peoples’ behavior is nearly impossible.  All I can do is offer support and options.

Mr. M, I hope my answers are something you can get behind on November 15th.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about me and also for jamming out the Zone.

Rock.

Jeremy

Coral gets bizarre obsessions from time-to-time.  Yesterday she wanted me to download a guy named Adam Cohen and his track “Cry Ophelia” and an old mid-90s group Marry Me Jane.

She told me the Adam Cohen comes from her early 20s when she used to listen the Ocean all the time at night.  and I procreated with her!  But she does have a warm spot in heart for soft favourites of yesterday and today.

Marry Me Jane I could not track down as easily.  Marry Me Jane was a band that wrote some catchy pop rock in the 90s and released a handful of albums.  Only one, their self titled did anything that warrent me tlaking about them now.  This album was the pseudo soundtrack for the Sarah Jessica Parker film, If Lucy Fell.  The band broke up soon after.  The album is out of print and not available on iTunes.

You can listen to it here.

Lastly, can anyone help me destroy… but then rebuild my computer?  It is getting so slow.  I want to destroy everything.  Keep the pictures, documents and music and blank everything and start it fresh… is that a skill you have and can do for me for a decent price or help me do?  My desktop is making me want to punch a kitten… and that sorta aggravation is not healthy.
