Last night was the all candidates meeting.  It was an interesting time.  It was basically 14 people all saying the same thing, differently.  hmmm.

Earlier today I took part in the 2nd annual MARPAC (Maritime Forces Pacific) Media vs. navy hockey game.  It was a close one, but media did lose 6-4.  Navy potted an empty netter (my fault, I missed the puck when I had the chance) right at the end.

But man was it fun.  They treated us spectacularly, felt like a “real” hockey game.  Jerseys, marching band, national anthem, intermission.

I filled out a ton of questionnaires today in regards to the election.  I’ll post them tomorrow… This weekend, Coral and I will be doing some door knocking.  Next week we are taking a mini holiday to Port Angeles!  No, really, we are.  The boat is $12.50 each if we walk on.  We’ll find the cheapest motel we can walk to and we’ll wander the town. and maybe get drunk.  and probably get wet.  I think the rain has finally come and it ain’t leaving till March.

I created my Movember page.

Check it out and make a donation please.

Lastly… hmmm.  Some dude who was in the Power Rangers back in the day just got convicted for a horrific murder.

WTF?

Yeah… its real… and terrible.

So that got me thinking about the Power Ranger… started getting the wikipedia all going (when I should be studying sewage treatement… bad Jeremy, bad!) and I stumbled on Amy Jo Johnson. The Pink Ranger.

Pink Ranger Amy now puts put music… and is on the CTV Police show “Flashpoint.”  Good for her.

I went to iTunes, and sure enough, she has a few albums.  They all sorta suck, but way to try.

Everything you need to know about Amy Jo Johnson.

Johnny B. Shields at the ole Zone Facotry is all about Beth Hart lately.

Beast’s “Mr. Hurricane” is the iTunes free single of the week.  Go get it!

Grey’s Anatomy was another gooder.  The show had some groovy indie rock as per.  I liked  the last track played.  Shady Bard’s “Torch Song.”

Myspace: Shady Bard

They also jammed out a track by Erin McCarley’s “Gotta Figure This Out”… but I think she is a socialist or someone that doesn’t care about money because her music… well the song featured on the show seen by millions today is not available for download… so no .99 cents for her.

MySpace: Erin McCarley

and I think the show featured Brazillian Girls doing “Good Times.”  Which is weird, but also wonderful.

Coral stumbled on this singer songwriter feller form Vancouver (kinda…. he seems to be a citizen of the world that has or maybe IS living in the terminal City).

I believe our hero, Sam Bradley is friends with Robert Pattinson… aka Edward the glittery vampire from the Twilight series.  And they wrote a song called “Too Far Gone.”

and its sorta good.

Myspace: Sam Bradley

OK, that is all I got.  I am tired.  i should have started writing earlier, because then I could have given more.  But right now, I want to jam out the songs I just blogged about and decompress.

Go with yourself.

I updated my Purevolume page today with a clip from my radio show.  A couple Fridays ago, I was laying on the couch watching the view as I do most mornings.  Basking in the warmth form my fake electrical fire, when my little baby girl Madelyn crawled over to the fake fire.  I  sprang to Ninja Dad action, but alas, too late.  Madelyn had planted her dirty baby palm on the glass to my fake fire.

I freaked!

But she did not wail, nay, she did not even whimper.

I thought I had witnessed a miracle.  Could my baby have super human powers?  The power to to touch fire and control its mystery?  Harnessing the raw power of fire to fight evil… or perhaps, to fight good?

I walked over to the fire and touched it myself.

I too felt no pain.  But I do not have super powers.  The fake fire is just that.  Fake.  And cold to the touch.  Now, how this cold fire creates heat?  The engineer who designed this feat of modern engineering, that man is a magician.

Coral has been having a bizarre lust for the Soul Asylum song “Misery” lately.

Today before our adventures around Esquimalt putting up campaign posters she commanded me to craft a “Misery” playlist.  And so, today I present and 90s-ish inspired riff rock radio requiem… or some sort of alliteration.

Coral’s Misery

01) Soul Asylum – “Misery”
02) The Replacements – “I’ll Be You”
03) Dishwalla – “Counting Blue Cars”
04) Live – “Selling the Drama”
05) Wallflowers – “The Difference”
06) Wallflowers – “6th Avenue Heartache”
07) K’s Choice – “Not An Addict”
08) Mad Season – “River of Deceit”
09) Alice in Chains – “Don’t Follow”
10) Ryan Adams – “To Be Young”
11) Against Me! – “Thrash Unreal”
12) Smashing Pumpkins – “Mayonnaise”
13) Buckcherry – “Lit Up”
14) Nada Surf – “Popular”
15) Eve 6 – “Promise”
16) Goldfinger – “Here In Your Bedroom”
17) Ugly Kid Joe – “Everything About You”
18) Hole – “Violet”
19) R.E.M. – “Whats the Frequency, Kenneth?”

Most these songs are form the 90s.  Actually, I think Against Me! and Ryan Adams are the only two from the modern rock era to make the grade.  hmmm.  I used the Genius to randomly select a playlist, then massaged it for time and cut out the bizarre shit and moved things around for flow.  Ilike the genius because it sometimes gets me thinking about songs I’d never think to listen to, or I overthink the playlist, when really I want some something groovy to drive to.  If you grew up in the suburbs and listened to mainstream commercial rock radio in the 90s, then you shouldn’t be a stranger to any of these bands… and most these songs were the “hits.”  Replacements maybe will be new for you.  But if you read my blog with any regularity, you’ll know that I love the Replacements and they will fit most any rock inspired playlist.

I WAS in love with iTunes Genius… and I do still sorta like Genius, but sometimes it makes me go WTF?

I wanted to base a playlist on Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.”  Brilliant song.  I did get a wonderous song from Rogue Wave called “Eyes” which is special and a song that made me sad in Pinback’s “Fortress.”

But then a whole bunch of other crud… mind you, all this “crud” is on MY hard-drive… but still, Genius was down-right  well… genius with yesterday’s “Pennyroyal Tea” playlist.  I guess I just expected genius everytime.

Coral and I just finished watching Grey’s Anatomy and I am not liking the lack of nurses on the show.  Nurses are a big part of getting healed and they are never anywhere to be found… it is always some crying, over-sexed doctor saving the day.  I haven’t had too many encounters with the health care system (ouch wood) but I pretty big one was the birth of Madelyn.  And it was nurses that were the for the whole ordeal and it was nurses that make you feel better.  Sure, doctors swoop in from time to time, but it was nurses who did all the work.  There should be more nurses on Grey’s Anatomy.

A couple stories in the news today that had me looking cock-eyed at the computer and wondering, “wow, this my community.”

Times-Colonist: Felon Steals Again Minutes After Being Released By Police

A 33-year-old man, already out on probation for breaking into a house, was picked up two weeks ago and taken to Victoria police headquarters for allegedly stealing a camera from a car. He was processed and released back onto Caledonia Avenue, outside headquarters. Undercover officers watched in amusement as he walked half a block away and, barely out of the shadow of the police station, returned to old habits.

“Within five minutes he breaks into another two cars,” said Sgt. Grant Hamilton, police spokesman.

Neat.  Imagine if that was your car and you had to pay the $300 deductible.  grrrr.

The police are cool about it, god bless ’em.
Both Hamilton and Bown were reluctant to criticize the justice system for its role in handing out sentences that appear to do little to deter career criminals. They said police simply focus on doing their jobs, which is only one part of the law-enforcement process.

“It is definitely a concern of ours that these people come and go from jail, but it’s a bigger social issue of what to do with these people,” said Bown.

“We can’t put everybody in jail. There’s just not enough room.”

I get that, can’t throw every criminal in jail… but you know what?  I bet we could find a cot or something to roll out for this guy, I mean he really wants to be in jail.

I am having a minor obsession right now with Vancouver uber cutesters Mother Mother.

I read about them the other day in the TC of all places and thought I might like to check them out.

Groovy boy/girl harmonies like the New Pornographers or Stars.  A couple of the songs on O My Heart do get a little silly, but they are all super shiny cute.

Since it has become official that I am running for Esquimalt Town Council, I am getting all sorts of emails from groups in the region.  Today I did a survey for a group called Citizen Canine.  In all honesty, I had never thought too much about the life of a dog in Esquimalt and these people forced me to open my eyes and think… hmmm, is Esquimalt a good dog town?

I want to say yes.  But I don’t have a dog.  I hit Esquimalt’s website and the town does have lots of opportunities for dogs to play and exercise.

Having just finished the book, The Grapes of Wrath, I have moved on to another class, All Quiet on the Western Front.

Paul Gross’ Passchendaele was good, but it was no All Quiet.  The cover of the book says it all, “The greatest war story ever told.”

I have read the book before and watched the 1979 remake of the film.  I just finished reading the scene where they do their first battle.

One of my favourite scenes comes a bit later when the main character Paul gets trapped behind enemy lines in No Mans Land for a bit and shares a trench hole with a dying Frenchman.

One of these days I should make a list of books that all men should read before they die.  My buddy Bob told me that he has been in a bit of a classics trip lately too, so I should see what he likes, and if you got a favourite, lay it down in the comment section.

Grapes is on the list… but right at the very very top is All Quiet.

I think I’ll need to pour a tub and settle in to the next chapter of my book.

The Zone Phone was fired up last week when it came to talking about a recent BC Supreme Court ruling that lets people camp in the park.

Purevolume: Tent Cities / Jeremy can NOT grow a mustache

***

I got an email from a Zoner named David.

Jeremy;

I understand the homeless situation, and with closing mental health and shelter beds, we’ve intensified their plight. But parks are not the solution. You camped, you moved on. Did you plant a vegetable garden on the lawn of a park in Thunder Bay? (My hometown). Did you dig a latrine?

You were a transient, not a squatter. You said “The parks are for everyone, even the homeless guys…” or words to that effect. You’re right. But this camping is NOT using the PUBLIC parks for their intended purpose, and that’s wrong. I suggest that when a tent city is set up, it denies use of that portion of the park to the remainder of the public and that it is illegal to deny me and my family that access.

This judicial ruling may be the best thing to happen to homelessness. I’ll bet the backlash will trigger the powers to be to open the mental health beds again. Then there will be adequate beds for those who chose to live in this fashion.

I am very happy to report that I will be a judge for the 2009 Juno Awards.  Best Children’s Album.  Right-O.

and the lobbying begins with this epic video from Zoner Wendy and her son Evan.

Now I get that AC/DC is a wickedly popular band.  But holy moly is Brian Johnson out of touch.  He slams iTunes with one breath and in his next hands Wal-Mart an exclusive for the new record Black Ice.

There is so much wrong with his logic, it would take me all day to go over it.  And I also fully appreciate that most AC/DC fans don’t care, but as a man that:

A) admittadly enjoys the odd AC/DC track and wants the escape to simple musical excess like anyone else

and

B) still pays for his music and my weapon of choice is iTunes

His comment:  “Maybe I’m just being old fashioned, but this iTunes, God bless ’em, it’s going to kill music if they’re not careful,” 61-year-old singer Brian Johnson told Reuters. “It’s a monster, this thing. It just worries me. And I’m sure they’re just doing it all in the interest of making as much cash as possible. Let’s put it this way, it’s certainly not for the love, let’s get that out of the way, right away.”

is so aggravating.

It is wrong and Greg Sandoval explains why better than I ever could.  God bless ya Greg.

AC/DC’s iTunes Boycott is on a highway to hell (get it? its an AC/DC lyric)

The moral of the story… I don’t care if you don’t want to sell your music on iTunes.  I just won’t buy it.

whoa… peace

This is pretty groovy, I read this on PSR and want to share it here.

“In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. “

Today (or the other day I guess) he raps about the economy and how it ain’t all scary.

When Corj and I got our hands on a Jeep, the beast came with a year subscription to Sirius.  Pretty nice little luxury.  Commercials on the radio generally don’t bbother me like the do many people, nor does the music mix.  I get commercial radio and understand it.  Sometimes, I actually like commercials.  What I did love about Sirius was a couple things.

Sirius Hits One:  Their top 40 channel.  They played the hits, and thats it.  Came in handy when desgning my playlist for Hugos and when Coral and I would drive the hinterlands of British Columbia.

Left of Center:  Their KEXP wannabe station.  I never understood why Sirius never cut a dela to just broadcast KEXP, they do it better, better music, better jocks, more passion… but the show got ‘er done.

Howard 100:  LOVED IT.

Those three shows aren’t worth me me shelling out $12 a month for the service.  But I do miss Howard Stern.  I htink I will truely feel the impact next roadtrip Coral and I take where I’ll need ot pack CDs and and the iPod.  I enjoy talk radio when I have  along journey.  helps me stay focused on driving and its entertaining.

and I’m not the only dude to shuffle off the Howard dial.

Maybe one day I’ll make more money or something, then I’ll resign up… just for Howard.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with some music news form the Green Day front.  No getting aorund the fact that 2004’s American Idiot was a modern rocking phenom.  EWhen you punch up the ocean and hear the robot voice track tee-up “Boulavard of Broken Dreams” you’ve hit critical mass.

The boys are back in the studio with Butch Vig and here is a little taste of what they are working on.

Weezer have a new music video for their modern rocking hit “Troublemaker.”  Generally I find Weezer pretty basic (this song is no exception) but people seem to really like this track.  The music is kinda cool, Weezer break a bunch of Guiness Records with their fans for example, The Biggest Custard Pie Fight, Air Guitar Jam, Most People on a Skateboard, Guitar Hero marathon, largest game of Dodgeball (which I think the Zone should try and destroy next Dodgeball season) and yeah.

I was inspired by the crumbling world economy (and Coral and I trashed our budget last week and have a LOT of money to make up) so I took Kraft up on their offer for the classic simple meal.  Grilled Cheese sandwich and tomato soup.

I went to Save-On Foods today, a company owned by my corporate overlord (I am saving up my Save-On points to buy my freedom) and bought the Western Family brand processed cheese, whole wheat bread and tomato soup.  Coral wanted me to get the Campbells’s reduced salt soup, but reduced salt soup is like $1.20 MORE than full salt soup.  Good thing we aren’t dying.  It would suck to have to buy healthy food.  You pay more for less… bizarre.

Its funny, Kraft always inspires me to try wholesome and cheap home cooked meals… yet I never buy Kraft.  I get to the store and the store brand is right beside Kraft and always cheaper… and I am standing there going, “well I am on a budget…” and reach for the store brand.  If I were Kraft, I’d have a talk with  the grocery stores, because they go out of their way to get you to NOT buy their food.  Maybe Kraft needs ot open their own store or get cheaper or something.

I also bought the Western Family ketchup which pissed Coral off royally.  I don’t eat ketchup becuase I think it’s the gnarly devil sauce, but Coral puts that red dip on everything.  She said the one thing you don’t CHEAP out on is ketchup.  “Its a rule.”  Whatever, I missed that memo.  She said, “I am mad at you, but one day I’ll get over it.  You’re still sleeping on the couch.”

Our grilled cheese sandwich and soup combo breaks down to about .88 cents a meal.  yum yum!
