triumph or tragedy?
Posted in life or something like it, tagged Dave Sawchuk, Enviroment, Grocery Shopping on September 10, 2009| Leave a Comment »
One of the old branding phrases I had for the Morning After Show back in the olden days was… “that time in the morning where you take stock of last night. Triumph or tragedy?”
Yesterday was a real triumph, thinking about grocery shopping and the system of staying to the outside in the giant box store. If you only buy the goods that are generally found on the edges of a grocery store, you save money and eat better.
For me, that means the Save-On Foods in Vic West. I walk in and hit the fruits and veggies, then the bakery, meats at the back, dairy on the far side. Basket full, total cost $20!

The trials and successes will be posted DAILY on his blog. DAILY? you bet.

I have been thinking lots lately of some physical activities I’d like to do to try and be more active. I really like hockey, but it doesn’t jive with my schedule. Coral and I have found a dodgeball league that will be firing up on Thursdays right as I finish my show which if good.
Thinking about what I like, what I want to get into…. well, I think I want to do some medieval sword fighting.
Manny moons ago, I was involved with this group called The SCA. The society for creative anachronisms. They were/are a funny lot, but basically, every week my buddy Paul and I would head out to a school rec room in Kitsalino and get shit kicked by big metal dudes with clubs for a few hours. As you can imagine, mucho fun.
Paul and I did this for some time and sadly, that Thursday practise every week in the city ended. We had to find a new group and I tagged along with some guys doing it in Coquitlam.
A club of grown adults who pretend to live in a fantasy medieval world atracts a certain breed. The Thursday thing in Vancouver had a special lot, but for the most part, it was bunch of guys in their 20s, that listened to epic metal, had beards, and liked to fight.
But as I got more involved with the club, well… I met some characters and it became less fun and very serious (for some people). Paul and I stopped going, whatever, life moves on.
Fast forward to now, and I still get the urge to do some fighting. A few weeks ago I thought maybe I’d try this MMA that is all the rage. I called some gyms and visited a couple and two horrible truths stood out.
MMA Guys are asshole. Judge SCAers all day, fine, but MMA guys are generally the d-bags you make fun of in the bar.
The other; MMA is expensive.
Lame, to beat the shit out your fellow man, you have to pay money for the privilege.
And I was a little down… anything fun I thought of costs mucho bux and/or requires tons of equipment. But then I remembered SCA.
True, there is and can be some expensive equipment involved but when I first started I fought in hockey gear (basically) and some borrowed stuff. The helmet needs to be a real deal metal medieval contraption because giant Odin looking fellows are swinging clubs at your head. But the rest can be whatever you got laying around that you feel like taping to yourself.
As I got into SCA more, I pieced my kit together as I had money/time/found a deal and by the end I had some bad ass functional medieval armour!
Part of the fun was putting it together and sourcing it. And this was back in the infancy of the internet, I bet now I could find what I need easily on Craiglist of eBay.
Heck I might even still have some gear at my folk’s place (though I doubt it, and if its there, its over ten years old, so I can imagine fairly rotten).
The point is, I like history, I like fighting and I love medieval total war, so I think I will fire up some medieval sword fighting again. If anyone is down, we could form our won club and do fight practice a couple times a week maybe? Or join up with the SCA? whatever works. We’ll find out how to make our own armour on the internet and try to do it ourselves (those rain collection barrels they sell in Vancouver might be the perfect plastic to make a scale mail armour). I had a helmet, heck I had two… but I left one at the radio station and haven’t seen it since and I don’t know where the other one is, so that I might have to try and buy again.
Anyways, that’s the story… I am going to start up a medieval sword fighting club and if you’re into it, let me know and we’ll try and find a rec hall or space to do it.
Go with yourself.

Funny story, I am out at The Station House pub on a Friday night. Meet a couple rad Zoners and we get to talking about the “podcast where I lay down some sick beats.” Oh Capital Rock City?
That’s the one. The one guy tells me he downloaded it once and loved the music bed I used… OK, nice and the other guys says he follows it every week… but has never heard it! He reads about it from my blog, Facebook, The Zone dot FM.
I wonder, are there others out there that follow Capital Rock City from the blog/facebook but don’t actually download the show? Hey! You’re the guy I need the MOST to take the next step in our relationship, I’m ready, you’re ready, let’s take this to second base and actually download Capital Rock City.
Slide your hand inside the bra of radio and download: Capital Rock City #72
And since we’re both feeling really sexy tonight, maybe you’ll consider subscribing using this handy dandy RSS feed or searching ‘Capital Rock City’ on iTunes and having the podcast delivered to your computer every week.

DJ Notes
01) The Paper Cranes – “Telephone”
02) Dan Kosub – “Blue and Gray”
03) Said the Whale – “Camilo (The Magician)”
04) We Are Seven – “Soul Fever”
Right, so this week I was supposed to have Saul on the show… pushed them back to next week. This week I start by saying “Said the Wheel” instead of “Said the Whale.” Ha, I talk for a living.
Miranda of The Paper Cranes comes on CRC 72 chit-chatting about the BREAKING NEWS that the pride of Esquimalt will now be a duo. whoa.
Uh oh, I have to fire another fact checker here at Capital Rock City. I asked for bands on Facebook and Jessica McCool sent me a link to one of her faves. I assumed the dude was from Vic (or maybe Van or something) and included his music, which I thought was pretty good. Turns out the man is from Toronto! Zoinks, not very 100 mile audio diet of me. My bad. Talented song writer, very cordial in the emails we exchanged, so whatever. Free song on a podcast.
* fun fact * Jessica McCool used to be a weekend announcer on The Zone circa… hmmm, 2003? 2004?
*UPDATES*

Tyler from Said the Whale came on the show to talk about the character in his song “Camilo.” He is a real dude and he performs magic card tricks at parties.
Look for Said the Whale in Victoria on September 24th playing in Element as part of the Rifflandia Festival.
We call CRC 72 a podcast with an acoustic ditty from We Are Seven. cool band name, based on an olden days poem.

that’s all I got… oh, you know that band The Dudes? Yeah check out their song “Connected.” They do a shout out to Victoria! True story.
“I’ve been alive/2005 Victoria/I laid a lot of high fives”
I remember that! The guys have always had a special place in their heart(s) for our Island city because they do some of their biggest crowds outside of Calgary here. They too will be part of Rifflandia. A Zoner called into the show letting me know about that. thank you mystery Zoner person.
That’s all I got. If you like the podcast or think maybe someone you know might, please share the link with a friend and I’ll talk at you next week.

Last night the city of Victoria unveiled its plans for replace Victoria’s iconic Johnson Street Bridge (The Blue Bridge).
Times Colonist: Victoria Council Seeks Public Opinion on Three Bridge Options
Most people I talk to around the Zone radio station don’t seem to care for the old Blue Bridge and are excited to have something new go up. Local Victoria historian Ross Crockford wants to preserve the old one. OK Ross, I’ll bite, why should we preserve the Johnson Street Bridge?
Download and Listen: Ross Crockford on the value of the Johnson Street Bridge
Read Ross’ Blog Unknown Victoria: That Old Blue Bridge
Funny story Ross, if we were going to be real sticklers for preserving history, shouldn’t we not only keep this monster of the industrial age, but also paint it black?
Just say’n. A black bridge would be mighty bad ass and make a real statement.

Blinking lights, smoke machine, purple tights and a black mini-skirt/shortshorts on a dude… yup I was at a Marilyn Manson concert… I’ll talk about that in a second but first:
A Zoner named Dylan made me aware of the website Music Under Fire and their list of Phoenix remixes. What a way to start the night!
Check it out: Music Under Fire
The site also has some Fleet Foxes remixes? what? sure I’ll have to listen to those too.
Just got back from the Marilyn Manson concert. If you were reading my twitter feed… then you’ll know, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the MM experience.
I hate coming down on rock shows because I know that there were many people at the show that LOVED it and I become “that guy” harshing on their buzz, but on the list of shit shows I’ve seen at the arena, if Manson is not the bottom, he then shares it with Sum 41.
Uninspired would be the best word to describe. The show basically consisted of Manson frolicking around on stage with lights blinking and a smoke machine belching fog for a solid hour. Admittedly, I am a minor MM fan, but I didn’t recognize any songs till “Dope Show” late in the set. The vocals were so affected and muddy it was hard to hear the main attraction and there was virtually no production. No screens, crazy lights, midgets or demons! I guess expected more from the man than the goth lite served up. He came, cashed the cheque and will move on to the next show.
The brief moments of energy came from the sparse hits he served up, “Dope Show,” “Sweet Dreams” and the encore “Beautiful People.” The one song encore of “Beautiful People” was by far the best part of the night. If the group had that production and energy all show… it would have been a far superior rock show.
From what I learned of the man, he has lots of hats and changes them often on stage (costume changes are totally rock & roll!), knew we’re in Victoria and kept saying, “Victoria!” and he likes to spit water into the crowd. I ran into a few morning show announcers up past their bed time. Both Jason and DW were there and after the show I bumped into the Kool FM gang including a giddy Robin! Pretty rare to ever see any morning radio show announcer out and about on a school night, let alone three of them. Its like spotting a unicorn riding a leprechaun, rare indeed.
If you are a huge Manson fan, then I am sure the show would have served. The show had some flashes of awesome but if you’re a moderate to curious fan then I’d put a skip on purchasing tickets to see Manson age poorly on stage.

Finally… FINALLY started reading the text book I acquired on Photoshop. huzzah. Maybe one day I’ll be competant.

That’s all I got right now, I wanna make some couscous and think about bed.

I’ll admit it, I have a soft spot for some top 40 music and one of my faves is Kid Cudi. He teamed up with Ratatat and MGMT for this stoner rap jam? sure, stoner rap jam it is.

God Bless Alton Brown and his show Good Eats. He was talking Buffalo Chicken Wings the other day and utilizing the power of the PVR, I saved the show so I could try to make it myself.
As anyone who watched Alton’s show knows, the dude throws a ton of knowledge at you, from the history of the Buffalo Chicken wing, to how to butcher your wings for cooking.
If you buy your chicken wings in a “family” pack from the grocery store, they are exceptionally well priced. But you got a lot of work to do to get them ready for consumption. Hope you like handling raw chicken!
I had to get right in there and chop ends off the wings, then separate the wings at the joint which was a fun, medieval process. When that was all done, you get a pot boiling with a steamer basket and steam the wings for 10 mintues. Pull the wings out and place them on racks over a backing sheet.
You need to then put the wings in the fridge for an hour. While that is happening get your oven fired up to 425 degrees.
When the oven is ready to go, pop the wings in for 20 minutes. then flip them over and cook for at least another 20 or until the skin is golden and crispy.
To make the sauce, combine about 3 ounces of butter and a clove of chopped garlic in a microwave safe bowl and heat on low power till it melted. Put that buttery goo in a great big mixing bowl with an equal part of hot sauce (I used Frank’s) and a good pinch of salt. Whisk and when your wings are ready, put them in the mixing bowl while popping hot and toss in the sauce.
Serve with celery and blue cheese dip and you’re loving life.
The only issue you’ll have is, they’re seriously restaurant quality yumtastic… but a pretty good investment of time… you’ll be asked to make them all the time!

A day late a buck short… I’m writing the report… oh wow, Blink 182? really?
Capital Rock City #71 is a couple days late, and I apologize to you passionate CRCers out there who wait breathlessly each and every week for your fix of some fine BC rock & roll. Corj and I took Mads on a trip of the interior, then yesterday was just way too busy and I was sick and blah blah blah… yeah.
Today is the day, and I thank you for finding Capital Rock City and downloading the show.

DJ Notes:
01) Vince Vaccaro – “Costa Rica (acoustic)”
02) A Trophy Life – “Samonite (I was Way Off)”
03) TV Heart Attack – “A/O”
04) Daniel Wesley – “Pilgramidge (live on The ZAS)”
Vince Vaccaro crafted a video for an alternate recording of one my favourite VV cuts, “Costa Rica.” Whenever I play this song for someone they become a Vince fan. Both my sister and Coral love the song. The video is an excellent DIY creation and well worth about 3 minutes of your time.
The only thing Vince… I noticed a shot of Vancouver radio station The Peak 100.5, but no clips of The Zone? next video I’m sure.
Our September Band of the Month ’round these parts is a group called A Trophy Life. You can hit the Band of the Month PAGE on THEZONEDOTFM and download some songs for totally free man.
TV Heart Attack is a Vancouver band that I have featured on the show before. Peak (and former Zone) music director James Sutton turned me on to the group. They recently competed in the Peak’s Performance Project where they were a finalist.
TVHA’s new record is called Lost in the Sway and is available now at finer record stores or on iTunes.
On October 20th I will have been married for 9 days AND I’ll be able to get my paws on the brand spanking new Daniel Wesley record. Before taking off on holidays last week, Daniel came by the Zone and recorded a song called “Pilgrimage.”
The shows today starts with a fine taste of the group Holy Fuck. I love this group with features the dude from the band By Devine Right! remember them?
Holy Fuck is going to be in Victoria for the Rifflandia Festival and as luck would have it, they are playing on the only night I have free that weekend to hit a rock show! Rifflandia looks amazing this year and I wish I could check out more shows… I know a few Morning After Show readers would be interested in Sam Bradley… yup, he’s playing too all you R Pattinson fans.
Next week on CRC 72 I am hoping to have the boys of Saul in the studio. Steve of the band Rotterdam and his set of Vic metal for CRC 73 and then maybe Two and I will be ready for the special live acoustic CRC 74? maybe?
That’s all I got, thank you for downloading Capital Rock City and if you like the show, please share it with a friend.
