There is a TV commercial they seem to play all the time when I’m watching highlights on TSN or Sportsnet. Its for erectile dysfunction… 40 Over 40. I watch it and think… man, we sure do get preoccupied with weird shit.
I was talking about this commercial on twitter with @TimAyres, and he made a comment about the other weird shit we could be preoccupied with. I laughed and thought about it some more then made this with Cassie and Kim at the Zone.

Hockey! with Jeremy – Practice & Hockey Sense

I have been working at the Zone the past few days on a new project called “Hockey! with Jeremy.” My challenge is to create a hockey feature to be broadcast on the radio during the intermission of Victoria Royal‘s hockey games. I have only made two so far (its a lot of work to produce spoken word radio… who knew?).
I have enjoyed the practice thus far… and look forward to trying to create compelling audio and improving my style as the season progresses. Have a listen to the first two segments.

“Practice” was fun because I got actually sit on the bench and yap with the boys during a rest in practice. Plus I had the chance to talk with Kevin Sundher and he is the Royal’s first line stud.
“Hockey Sense” I recorded this morning after practice and I had the chance to interview the boys (and a coach!) as they came off the ice. I of course caught up with homeboys Jesse Pauls and Brenden Persley again. But I missed my boy Timmy T who might be the most hilarious Royal I’ve talked with so far.
Tomorrow (Tuesday, November 8th), The Royals are at home against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The PR flaks from the Royals said I might get to sit in the suicide box at ice level and record the sounds of the game. Nice. Better bring my helmet. I might also interview some kids about hockey… so if you’re bringing your kid to the game and see me, say hi so I can put your midget you on the radio.

“The Township of Esquimalt wants to ditch the Victoria police in favour of the RCMP, Mayor Barb Desjardins revealed Tuesday afternoon.”
That’s what the Times Colonist newspaper read today.
I don’t know how wise of an investment this will be for Esquimalt considering the RCMP might be pulled out of BC over the next few years.
I do know, that if I were Mayor, I’d be doing things differently in Esquimalt.

I often talk about my days in college radio at CiTR as the host of The Morning After Show. Oh the times… circa 1998-2003, playing Canadian punk, metal and indie rock.
When I started there… I was young and dumb. But it was really fun learning new bands and hanging out with Vancouver’s most groovy folks.
The show before the MAS was called Vengeance is Mine. It was a PUNK show hosted by a guy named Trevor that had a leg dedicated to tattoos of villainous logos… “Decepticons,” The “Empire” from Star Wars, and “Cobra” from G.I. Joe. He dropped out of radio school (hey, I was going to radio school in the fall!) and he was a cook at the Atlantic Trap and Grill back when it was more divey and cool and less touristy and near the arena and stadium (but actually, still a fun place!).
Trevor was very friendly, loved music, was in a band, and was a huge inspiration on 18 and 19 year old Jeremy. One of his favourite bands that quickly became my new favourite band was Winnipeg’s Propagandhi.
Propagandhi made the kind of punk rock that punk rockers talk about making but don’t, or sell out.
In 2001 they released Today’s Empires, Tomorrow’s Ashes. The album very quickly became the most played record on my radio show. In fact, almost every radio show started with “Back to the Motor League.” The times when I couldn’t make the show and Paul flew solo, he played the song first!

At the time… the song was a party anthem for me. But I was also 21 and stupid. Listening now, the song still gets me fired up, but the message remains. The track talks about the co-opting the punk rock culture by corporations.
Generally Propagandhi are pretty politically charged… so being lectured every song isn’t for everyone… but I find the songs to be a great inspiration, and the energy to be positive. “Back to the Motor League” remains a favourite party rocker and usually a first play before a big night.

Interview >> Rise Against’s Zach Blair

Rise Against‘s 6th studio record, Endgame, debuted at #2 on the Billboard Chart. Guitarist Zach Blair also tried to tell me that it was number 1 in Canada and Germany! That’s something right. I like Canada, and Germany, you’re alright.
Zach and I had a little chit-chat over the phone as the band is currently in Berlin.
We talked about all sort of stuff. The record Endgame is kinda of a dark, concept record that is a bit heavier and faster then the previous couple records. There is a savage Grapes of Wrath quote when you open up the compact disc (do people still buy those?). Zach talks about the significance of that then delves into the some communist utopia mumbo-jumbo.
That leads the conversation toward “Help is on the Way” and he talk’s about making small changes in the world and taking care of yourself. because if you wait for someone else or the government you’ll be disappointed.
I gushed a bit about how the video is AWESOME so he explained that a bit.
Then… I dunno, we talk about some other things like Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio being on the record and Bill Stevenson of Black Flag and the Decendents producing it in Colorado and we end by reflecting on the time Rise Against came to Victoria and the guys hung out with the Darth Fiddler on Government Street. It was a slow day at the radio factory today so I took a long lunch to head downtown and get p to one of my favourite pastimes, record shopping.
Victoria has a few great record stores and my faves are Talk’s Cheap (556 Pandora) and Ditch Records (635 Johnson… but moving to Fort).
Today I was on a quest to continue my 45s collection and bought a combination of both classic and contemporary singles. A great reflection of how i listen to music at home, new and old.

The first song is a cover from the Gaslight Anthem. In November they released this limited edition rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Tumbling Dice” from Exile on Main Street. Great package and the vinyl is a brown marble-y look. Comes with a download card for the MP3 and the b-side, “She loves You,” is also not from the album American Slang, unless you downloaded it from iTunes… then it was one of the bonus cuts.
The National‘s second single is track one, side one from High Violet. A song called “Terrible Love.” Great song, but not the one I played for you, instead I went with the b-side, “She Was a Kindness.” “She Was a Kindness” was later included on the November re-issue of the album. Being a fan and buying the record when it came out means I get punished so I need to acquire it later. The cover continues the Mark Fox art theme… this single has a picture of Untitled (The Ark). The internet says my National single should be violet vinyl which would be so bad ass, but sadly, it is just plain jane black. Sad face.
Next we travel back to 1964. UK band The Shadows are known for popularizing the four piece rock band. Lead and rhythm guitar with bass and drums. This song is an instrumental.
Also in 1964 (I think), The Blues Magoos recorded their first single for Verve Records, “So I’m Wrong and You’re Right.” I first heard about the Blues Magoos on a 60s on 6 XM show. The DJ Cousin Brucie talked about how they were a favourite of his during the 60s. I thought, “alright, if this old DJ was from the 60s and this is what he listened to, they must be good!”
Moving forward almost 10 years and I found Al Green’s “Let’s Get Married.” I thought this jam from 1973 might be a good wedding type song and Al Green is always popular during my sets at the Veneto Lounge.
The final song is from late 70s Canadian punkers Teenage Head. Formed in Hamilton, Ontario… Teenage Head had a minor hit with 1980 single “Let’s Shake.” Sounds a whole heck of a lot like The Ramones. Its a fun catchy one for sure.

Yesterday, it seems someone thought it would be hilarious to drop a canister of dye into Goldstream.
Thankfully, the dye won’t have any long term environmental impact.
It did create a little drama on the radio.
