Download The Zone Afternoon Show: Zoner Rips Out His Roommate’s Toenail (mp3)

A bizarre moment today on the Zone Phone.  Tyler called into the show to request Phoenix’s “1901.”  He wanted to send it out to his roommate Cynthia because in mere moments, he was going to rip her toenail off her foot… and the savage medieval surgery happened live on the show.

I blogged about the fine man, Daniel Delaney last week.  He is the guy who has the mighty job of traveling North America and reviewing  street food.  Lucky!

Check out his show: Vendr.tv

We ended up becoming BFFs on Twitter and we unleashed its awesome power to hook up a quick Q&A.

Click and Listen to: Capital Rock City #59

Thank you for finding Capital Rock City from The Zone dot Fm slash Jeremy, not too much in the new music department this week and I have little time for DJ notes… so here’s the set. yeesh, not really selling the sizzle with that opening pitch. Trust me, it sounds better than I can describe.

***

DJ Notes

01) Crown the Wolf – “Primer Ride”
02) Japandroids – “Sovereignty”
03) Jets Overhead – “No Nations”
04) Acres of Lions – “Entertainment”

Sorry I don’t have more time for DJ Notes… its 3PM, time to make some radio magic on The Zone @ 91-3.  Here is what I wrote on the RSS Feed:

CRC 59 begins with the dramz. Did Pride Tiger’s bass player quit moments before their show this past Friday? I dunno if that’s true or what, but I do know Crown The Wolf showed up and did their thing. Japandroids from Vancouver have a trend of canceling shows whenever I am able to go see them. I don’t take it personally, I keep on keeping on. Jets Overhead is the Zone Band of the Month for June! and back from China! Nice. And the show ends with one of my fave Vic rockers, Acres of Lions. if you love the show as much as I do, please share a link with a friend and you can find out more always at http://www.thezone.fm/jeremy (Tuesday, June 02, 2009)

Click and Listen to: Inside the Producers Studio – Dave Sawchuk

I don’t know if this will be a regular feature or not, but the above audio snip is from some “tape” that I had for a commercial I made for Soprano’s.  Everyday before my radio show, I come a few hours early, and sometimes our producer Sheldon gives me a couple commercials to make.  Helps me keep my skills up in case I need to fill in for Sheldon.  I’m not very good so I generally get basic spots to craft… and usually Sheldon has already recorded the announcer.  When I get the audio to make the spot, it is never edited or a simple read of the copy.  There is always some sort of story or banter that Sheldon has with the “talent.”  I always chop it out to make the commercial obviously, but sometimes the little stories are interesting and the people telling them forget they’re being recorded.  Since the announcers are very comfortable and having a real one-on-one conversation with Sheldon, the style is different than you might find on a radio show and I personally find them interesting.

As I find stuff worth sharing, I’ll post it here as “Inside the Producers Studio.”

oh and that band… NorglenHere they are.

David Eleanor sent this email with the subject heading, “How to Revolutionize Radio: Intro the Song?”

A must read for anyone in the industry.

Hi There

This is a really silly thing to email you about, but THANKS for saying what the title & artist of a song is immediately before you play it – it’s so logical that it’s so stupid that radio ever did it any other way.

Thanks also for being the best radio station I’ve found since coming to Vancouver from Australia.

Cheers

Aroha

Thursday, April 23rd, The Killers came to Victoria for first time since what?  the summer of ’03?

This time, sold out in the Save On Foods Memorial Center and before the fantastic show, the Brandon and Ronnie came by the Zone suite for a chit-chat.  Because of the mega loud sound check going on below, we took the interview outside on the deck to soak up the sunshine.  The Killers thought it was cold, I disagreed and that set the tone for 6 wonderful minutes where we cover their stage setup and its Vegas influence, the upcoming covers record, Oingo Boingo, Danny Elfman’s influence on the song “Bones,” future real estate endeavors, alternate names for Killers songs, family life on the road, and Brandon’s wife’s favourite (or lack there of) Killers song.

Unfortunately off the mic, we talked about the Kanye West/Brandon Flowers collaberation (BULL SHIT! True story according to Mr. Flowers: Brandon was in Hawaii, walked past Kanye’s studio and popped in to meet him.  Next day, Kanye releases crazy news to world.  Brandon didn’t want to call him a liar on the radio because “Kanye is a nice guy.”), Camping in Oregon (Ronnie wants to buy property there), Cuervo Loran calling Ronnie the guitar player, Brandon’s kid and wife were at the show and expecting another son, they filmed some of the Vic show for possible future DVD projects and Brandon telling David Eleanor that Ronnie will talk Cuervo and my face off in the suite for hours after the interview (it wasn’t hours but the man likes to talk).

We never touched on the breakup rumours. (but this article says the collaboration with Kanye is true… so???)

Then the Killers hit the stage.

Highlight: Brandon saying “How you doing VICTORIA!?!”
Hilariouslight: Lead singer dude of Wild Light: “How you doing VANCOUVER!?!” (SWA?)

Outside the Killers show last Thursday, this group of wandering minstrels were working the line.  Turns out the boys were the band Wild Light, the group opening for the Killers.

This is was a woefully unprepared interview (thank you to David Eleanor for the super quick primer as the band wandered over).  Someone filmed it, which I did not notice, and posted it to Youtube.

Thank you Scott for tracking down this video and sharing it with me.

I’ll see if I can post my Killers audio from the interview when I get into the radio station today.

Go with yourself.

I updated my Purevolume page today with a clip from my radio show.  A couple Fridays ago, I was laying on the couch watching the view as I do most mornings.  Basking in the warmth form my fake electrical fire, when my little baby girl Madelyn crawled over to the fake fire.  I  sprang to Ninja Dad action, but alas, too late.  Madelyn had planted her dirty baby palm on the glass to my fake fire.

I freaked!

But she did not wail, nay, she did not even whimper.

I thought I had witnessed a miracle.  Could my baby have super human powers?  The power to to touch fire and control its mystery?  Harnessing the raw power of fire to fight evil… or perhaps, to fight good?

I walked over to the fire and touched it myself.

I too felt no pain.  But I do not have super powers.  The fake fire is just that.  Fake.  And cold to the touch.  Now, how this cold fire creates heat?  The engineer who designed this feat of modern engineering, that man is a magician.

Coral has been having a bizarre lust for the Soul Asylum song “Misery” lately.

Today before our adventures around Esquimalt putting up campaign posters she commanded me to craft a “Misery” playlist.  And so, today I present and 90s-ish inspired riff rock radio requiem… or some sort of alliteration.

Coral’s Misery

01) Soul Asylum – “Misery”
02) The Replacements – “I’ll Be You”
03) Dishwalla – “Counting Blue Cars”
04) Live – “Selling the Drama”
05) Wallflowers – “The Difference”
06) Wallflowers – “6th Avenue Heartache”
07) K’s Choice – “Not An Addict”
08) Mad Season – “River of Deceit”
09) Alice in Chains – “Don’t Follow”
10) Ryan Adams – “To Be Young”
11) Against Me! – “Thrash Unreal”
12) Smashing Pumpkins – “Mayonnaise”
13) Buckcherry – “Lit Up”
14) Nada Surf – “Popular”
15) Eve 6 – “Promise”
16) Goldfinger – “Here In Your Bedroom”
17) Ugly Kid Joe – “Everything About You”
18) Hole – “Violet”
19) R.E.M. – “Whats the Frequency, Kenneth?”

Most these songs are form the 90s.  Actually, I think Against Me! and Ryan Adams are the only two from the modern rock era to make the grade.  hmmm.  I used the Genius to randomly select a playlist, then massaged it for time and cut out the bizarre shit and moved things around for flow.  Ilike the genius because it sometimes gets me thinking about songs I’d never think to listen to, or I overthink the playlist, when really I want some something groovy to drive to.  If you grew up in the suburbs and listened to mainstream commercial rock radio in the 90s, then you shouldn’t be a stranger to any of these bands… and most these songs were the “hits.”  Replacements maybe will be new for you.  But if you read my blog with any regularity, you’ll know that I love the Replacements and they will fit most any rock inspired playlist.
