“Sound Characters stands as one of the most devastating aural artefacts of this or any decade.”

I found myself trolling the internet late last night as I usually do.  Last night I had a bit of purpose as I am working on some playlists for a restaurant and wanted to dive into the world of dubstep music.

My journey brought me to Pitchfork and I got to reading this week’s Resonant Frequency on Pitchfork.  Mark Richardson was writing about context of music on how our current generation of music lovers enjoy their music differently (and at time, at odds with the artist) than previous generations.  In our world of iTunes and bit torrents and remixes, we can take another person’s art, and make it our own and and control the means of its presentation.  Changing the artists intention to fit our own.  Mark isn’t really saying that is a good or bad thing, only that it is the way it is.  But “sometimes” having faith in the artist’ s presentation can yield a certain excitement and understanding of the work.  He had some examples of artists where you really needed to experience their work on their terms to get it.  Mark then went on about a now dead lady named Maryanne Amacher.

Reading about Maryanne got me very excited about sound and presentation.  Maryanne experimented with noise and music and performance in some strange and wonderfully unique ways.  One of ideas that really intrigued me, was the idea of otoacoustic emission.

Basically, Maryanne could play tones that would stimulate your inner ear.  The result would be the perception that the sound you were hearing wan not originating from the speakers front of you, but rather, to quote this article, ” sound that filled not only the space but the listener’s skull, to the extent that the sound actually seemed to be pouring out of your ears.”

Wow, late last night I had to try THAT!  Sadness, at 1AM or 2AM or whenever it was, I could crush my stereo to get the full effect.  Today at the Zone, I hopped in a studio and pushed the dial and sliders to 11 and let the tones and noise wash over me, the effect was as described.  Something I had never really experienced sonically.  And that was just enjoying 30 seconds of a clip I found.  I couldn’t imagine how a Maryanne Amacher “concert” might effect my brain.

I created a little podcast that features 30 seconds of Maryanne Amacher’s “Head Rhythm 1/Plaything 2” from her 1999 and only album Sound Characters (Making The Third Ear).

Download: Morning After Show – The Third Ear and Maryanne Amacher

The most important thing to do, to get it to work is listen to the sound clip contained on the podcast through speakers, not headphones.  It won’t work with head phones, and ideally you can crank the tones.

You should get an interesting sensation in your ears and it should seem like your ear drum is making sound.  You’ll get it for sure if you can crank it up on some good speakers.

I was able to get it to work on this 30 second clip I lifted off iTunes, but if you are intrigued like I am, I think her entire album of audio oddness will need to be purchased and figured out.

Two things.

First, this blog post was/is pretty good.  People Who Are Talented

Basically the guys says… if someone is really good at something, then they are likely good at other things.  A company you deal with that is truly good at what they do, is good at ALL aspects of that business, not a few.  Neat.

and then this advice.

“Left Eye” Lopes at the Dead Rock Star Party anyone?

Huzzah!

first this.

That is an end of the year high-light reel hit by the Pride of Port McNeil. Just an amazing freight train right through the Blackhawk captain Jonathan Toews.  The only sad points about the hit…

I like Toews, he’s a great hockey player, why couldn’t it have been Kane?
AND the devastating hit then created a mint scoring chance for the ‘Nucks that was whistled because the Hawks threw a tantrum after the text-book hit.  boo.

Still, Nucks win, the hit is amazing and it’ll live on Youtube for all time… or until Youtube gets bought out and the servers go dark.

Huzzah!

I did make it to the gym today and for once in my life, I ran into a business that was interested in catering to my needs for a cost that works.

Indeed Odyssey Fitness is 24 Hours.  That in of itself was a victory, but the icing for me is that the fee is just $50 a month, no long term contract, no extra fees, a month free and I can come at 2 AM when no one is there and not have to worry about some fitness instructor “selling” any “programs.”

The lady Joanne was sweet, I told her what I wanted, the fees were simple to understand and I signed up!  Heck, I might go after my DJ performance at The Clubhouse tonight.  We’ll see, I have an early wake up call Friday morning.

Next, and keep in mind, I like the Olympics (I am wearing my Olympic sweater right now AAMOF)… but what the fuck is going on?

Maybe I need to send a resume to the Provincial Liberals because how they thought this story would go over well with Johnny Q. Taxpayer is beyond me.

B.C. Spends $1 Million on Olympic Tickets for MLAs

This is how the meeting would have played out if I were in the room when this idea was hatched.

Government Cabinet Minister: “I think we should write a cheque for $1 million dollars of tax payer money to buy premium tickets to Olympic events.”

Jeremy: “no, don’t be retarded.”

then I would send them an invoice for $500,000 and Bob’s your uncle.

That no one stopped to say, hey wait a minute,” is what’s scary.

AND, why would any government official even have to buy tickets anyways?  Shouldn’t they just flash a badge and walk in?  We already paid for the games?  If Premier Gordon Campbell actually has to “buy” an Olympic ticket, then truly, the IOC is fisting us.

Outrageous… I mean not as outrageous as the BILLION with a ‘B’ price tag for secrutity for two weeks… but still, pretty scary.

and because no-one can do anything right in this world except for me.

This is embarrassing.

Victoria Mayor reneges on snow-shovelling bet

A week or so ago, Victoria and Regina entered into some sort of civic pride bet to see which Provincial capital could raise more food donations for the local food bank.  Regina spanked us (already embarrassed).  The bet called for the loser (Victoria’s Dean Fortin) to fly out to Regina to shovel some snow.

Now the guy isn’t going to go?  because of the cost of the flight and uhhh… carbon emissions?

Bike there dude.  You don’t make a bet, publicly, on behalf of our city, LOSE, then renege on the deal.  C’est dommage.

see, now I am in a bad mood, I better scroll back to the top of this blog post and watch the Willie Mitchell hit again.

oh, I totally got blogged about by Mixcloud! fun. Go with yourself.

Last Friday I was surprised to find that I had Slipknot front man Corey Taylor on the show.

Slipknot is arguably one of the biggest metal bands criss-crossing North America right now.  Their four albums, beginning with 1999’s Slipknot are all platinum sellers in Canada.

When I was growing up, Slipknot became hugely popular during the days of “nu-metal.”  For that reason, the masks, the horror themes… they weren’t really my style.  Which is a bit of a shame, because knowing that I would interview Corey Taylor, I went back and had a listen and the music is pretty good.

I am more a fan of his softer stuff.  I think “Snuff” is their best cut and I always enjoy Stone Sour.

Mike Devlin over at the Times-Colonist does a good job of explaining it all

Corey and I talked about growing up in Iowa in poverty, working multiple jobs, getting into metal and rock and roll.  The early days of Stones Sour and Slipknot.

We talk about what set Slipknot apart in 1999 and about the changes you’ll hear on the new(er) “All Hope is Lost.”

Some Slipknot fans are not so much into the changes… but fuck it, I like the new record!  and that surprised me.

Then we move on to, the end of Slipknot?

Finally, it gets weird and we talk about crazy fans, the masks, people dressed as Slipknot on Halloween, a horror convention in Las Vegas, and try to guess what kind of underwear Corey is wearing.

Mostly I liked Corey Taylor because even though I am clearly not a Slipknot fan, the dude was pleasant, respectful and a good time to chit-chat with on the radio.

So here it is, almost 19 minutes with Corey Taylor.

Saturday night I spent my evening in Langford for the last home game of the season for the Victoria Rebels football team.  They crushed the Vancouver Trojan by a score of like, a billion to twenty.  It was almost silly.  Friday on the ZAS before Corey came on the show, I had a chance to talk to a couple guys from the Rebels.

Glee Cory Monteith

It was a magical few minutes I shared with Victoria’s Cory Monteith.  Cory plays the character Finn on the musical situation comedy Glee.

My day begun today trying to track down Cory (see, I supposed to interview him on Monday but uh oh… I forgot).  We were exchanging Facebook messages at around 10 something this morning when I heard Whoopi on The View (I watch it daily) say, “Coming up, actor Cory Monteith from Glee…”  SWA?  That’s a trip I am messaging the guy right now on Facebook.

Low and behold, in New York they have the internet and he messaged back.

Have a Listen: Cory Monteith on The Zone Afternoon Show

Cory and I talk about how great Whoopi is, how he landed the role of Finn on Glee, growing up in Victoria, his fave actor on Glee is Jane Lynch because she is hilarious, and he used to be in a band in Victoria called Porch Life AND they actually played a Zone show or two at Steamers opening for old Zone Bands of the Month!  wow.  Oh and he is friends with Tegan and Sara guitarist Ted Gowans.

OK, good talk.

BOITANO!  What did you do?  This is why breweries in Victoria can’t have nice things.

Many moons ago, Phillips Brewery, the Pride of Esquimalt, was kindly persuaded by a Vancouver Brewer to change the name of the very popular Blue Truck beer to Blue Buck.

It was a sad time in the history of Victoria, but like generations past, we moved on.  Yet the indecencies continue.  Sara P and Boitano were invited to the Phillips for a Fringe Festival Party.  Sara would not confirm exactly how many IPAs Boitano had in his belly, but the man himself admitted… a “few.”  FYI… If you are ever pulled over by a cop and he asks, “have you had anything to drink tonight?”  You never answer, “a couple,” or “a few” unless you enjoy having your car towed.  You need to give an actual number… I learned that from a Vancouver City Cop… right…

So Boitano drinks a couple and then has to use the washroom and BAM!  Runs through the new Blue Buck robotic mascot and completely murders it!  Will it ever end for Matt Phillips?

Boitano has this to say for himself: I bet the Blue Buck was already broken when I LIGHTLY bumped it and it fell! Either way…I’m sorry Matt Phillips! – @Boitano913

Talking alcohol, yesterday the twittersphere barfed when Rod Phillips (no relation to Matt) posted on his twitter an unbelievable deal.  Be one of the first 50 people to re-tweet his post and you could purchase a bottle of wine for just two bucks!

You know that mantra, “if its too good to be true, it probably isn’t true?”  Well throw that shit out the window, because last night, I drank a bottle of $2 Spanish wine! Then I finished off an old bottle I had kicking around… and drank a beer.  Huzzah to a mid week drunk!  Thanks Rod.

I enjoyed an amazing BC Day weekend.  Saturday, my fiancee Coral and I took Madelyn to Beacon Hill Park to feed the ducks then off to Bear Mountain Stadium to watch the Victoria Rebels defeat the Okanagan Sun 34-21 in their football season opener.  Sunday we trucked off to Lake Cowichan for a day of swimming, beach, boating and sun.  I am a little sun burned.  The playlist for the drive up included Coral’s current fave, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Zero,” some Cage the Elephant, Phoenix, Interpol, Japandroids and The Rural Alberta Advantage.  Plus some electro sounding Hadoukan!

Monday, back to it broadcasting a BC Day holiday program.

Holidays are always a little slow on the Zone Phone (250-475-0913) but my-oh-my, the first three phone calls set up a “one of those” type of days moment.

The first call was some champion trying to be funny, “why do all radio DJs sound the same?

Then someone wanted to know if it was true that Lady Gaga is of The Third Sex?

and finally, Hep C outbreak at Thetis Lake.

Those were my first three calls sitting down for a BC Day afternoon… ahhh good times.

Isn’t this neat.  Last week or maybe a couple weeks ago, Coral emailed me a clip on Youtube to check out.

JK Wedding Entrance dance

The video had just begun its odyssey to the top of the internet pops and had a very modest 100,000 something views.  now it is 11 million!

But more interesting, Chris “I Hit Girls” Brown’s song “Forever” was featured and is seeing increased sales because of the popularity of the clip.  That dude better be dreaming up a pretty epic wedding present for this hipster Minneapolis couple because they may have just saved his career!

From FMQB dot com

While Chris Brown has certainly been receiving some bad publicity lately, it seems that a viral wedding video featuring his song “Forever” has given the song’s sales a boost. The YouTube hit, dubbed “JK Wedding Entrance,” featured the wedding party dancing down the aisle to “Forever.” Just five days after it was posted, the video was the most-cited clip, according to Nielsen’s BlogPulse, and has recently surpassed 10 million views. As a result, the song is now in the iTunes Top 10 and the video contains a link to purchase “Forever.”
