I am going to start with a couple emails today, my man Geoff talking about yesterday’s post about some bands I am jiving on including The xx:

“I like the xx disc but I know a few people who won’t even give it a listen because of the whole pitchforkmedia thing. pitchfork giveth and it taketh away.”

I thought that was a neat thought.  Its almost as if Pitchfork is becoming is a parody of itself.

I replied:

its as if them liking something is the kiss of death for a band. But I don’t care, generally if they really like something, there is something there to like. And even the records they pan, they generally write in a way that can still intrigue me. I remember when Silversun Pickups came out and Pitchfork gave it a “meh” review, they did it in a way that I read it and went, “you know, that might be something I like!”

Some feedback from a Zoner named Megan in regards to this week’s contest to win Stone Temple Pilots concert tickets…. which doesn’t have a clever name.  uh oh, bad DJ am I.  Basically I unleash the power of the FM dial and encode a “secret” message on either the left or right channel.  you need to pan your stereo right or left to hear it.  Megan is into it except… MONO stereo!  ahhhhh

“Hey! I have to say, the Stone Temple Pilots ‘beat the box office’ contest is cool, with the secret code and everything. But, I listen to the zone everyday” at work on my headphones, and it doesn’t work on headphones!! I get both messages in both ears. So, I am at an unfair disadvantage, tho I am a huge and religiously loyal zone fan!! Just sayin!”

I hope she figures it out, because today… the code is extra, extra special!

Lastly a message from local Victoria manabouttown JP Maurice.  He is part of a hip hop crew? sure crew, called The CFC and they have a new video for their song “City Drift.”  Listen for “City Drift” next week on Capital Rock City with songs from Purple Grimus, Rabbit and likely more Laundronauts/Steph Macpherson/Forestry.  Whoa, so much good new local music to get at…

Funk Vigilante reminds me of my old vigilante hat.  Many moons ago when I was snot-nosed suburban hipster, I went to the Warped Tour in Vancouver.  During the show I found this trucker hat (remember when those were so hawt!) that had the top cut off so it looked like a real D-bag styled golf vizer thing.  Written in sharpy marker was the word “vigilante.”  Cool.

Funk Vigilante describes themselves as:

The album is called “Civil Disobedience”  it’s like one of those hot lava burritos, blended up, and poured right into your listening hole.

which is much better than anything I could write.

The Goodbye Beatdown are a Vancouver band that is increasingly spending more and more time visiting us here in Victoria.  They’ll once again be here for a show on August 20th at Lucky Bar.

Liz Beattie was (maybe still is?) the bass player for Machina.  Remember that band?  Lately I notice she performs as The Liz Beattie band or on MySpace as Lizzie and Simon.  Simon is the keyboard player for Maurice and together they make some pretty indie pop.  Cute attack!

I end the show this week with Langfordians, Black Hat Villain.  You’ll get a chance to experience their post-grungy sounds live at The Station House Pub on Saturday, August 15th when they suppoert the Armchair Cynics.

Capital Rock City #65 // On The Road to Edmonton with Vince Vaccaro and Maurice

Back from my rip-roaring holiday in Edmonton and the first thing I did when I rolled into the radio was watch this fine Nirvana Mash-up.  But then the second thing I did, was hop in the Capital Rock City studio to jam out this week’s CRC.

Wow, if you remember last week, I was thinking out loud about the possibility of seeing Vince and Maurice on tour in Edmonton, well the stars aligned and on Friday night, I journeyed out to downtown Edmonton (1,300 km from downtown Victoria) with Coral, Alyx, Dave and Lacey to experience some fine Captial Rock in… uhhh… another Provincial Capital.

The venue was this hot, sweaty basement called Brixx Bar.  The room was downtown on some numbered street (they all look the same to me) just off Jasper under the Starlight Room.

We walked in and Coral and I wanted to fire this night up right so we ordered two three (one for Alyx) double Gin and Tonics.  $33!  SWA?  Edmonton what’s up?  Okay, one round later and I was on to their finest, cheapest beer… Lucky.

I was watching two fine Victoria rockers drinking Lucky Beer in… Edmonton.

Maurice and Vince were tired.  They had played Calgary the night before, bee-lined it north to Deadmonton, slept an hour or two then did Breakfast TV on CITY.  Slept a few more hours then had sound check at Brixx, oh the life of a touring working band.

The boys treated me like a star, told some stories, drank some beers and then Maurice tucked into their set.

As always, Maurice translates so much better live than on record.  The rock songs rock harder and far more furiously and the ballads are more passionate and desperate.  On record, sometimes I find their songs get lost in the production.  Coral was sold after their set and needed a t-shirt! Post Script, Coral sent me an email today:

And HEY! Your blog made it sound like Id never heard Maurice before “coral was sold after their set and bought a tshirt’

How about coral swooned. I was sold befooooore!
Being the long time Maurice admirer that I am, I was sad they did not play “High School Sweetheart.”  Maybe they were drunk, I know I was… but I am pretty sure promises were made to record that song for Capital Rock City??? maybe??? Maybe JP?

Vince did his thing after, using most the boy in Maurice as his backing band.  A very efficient way to do it.  Too bad more people in Edmonton don’t go out on a Friday night, it was a sparse crowd.  Any touring band might want to think about some more local support.  They had some group open, then the touring acts headlined… next time, have a local open and one close the night out.

I grabbed a copy of Maurice’s ‘Young People With Faces’ and Vince’s s/t LP, the girls got t-shirts and it was off to enjoy the rest of our holiday… which included lots of driving.

Maurice’s record stayed in the player lots.  “Anticipation” rose to the top for Coral and I.  Another song that peaked my interest was the final song of the podcast, “Unattainable.”  JP sings about Fernwood! and existentialism?  ahhh, you had me at Fernwood.

I knew the leader of Said the Whale way back in the olden days when he was just a 15 year old ponker kid in a band called My Buddy Dave.  Today, Tyler is an ex-UVic’er jamming out his new band based out of Vancouver called Said The Whale.  The band is starting to get some love and radio play.  You might hear Said the Whale on the Modern Rock Inbox with David Eleanor, or on The Peak in Vancouver.  Good times.

A Trophy Life commutes between Victoria and Vancouver.  Their song “Conversation Sucks” is from the new EP called “Go On Tour” ep.  “Conversation Sucks”  is titled after the former Zone Band of the Month Conversation.  The title is just a tongue in cheek reference, the bands are friends.  Tim of Conversation sings and plays keys/samples for A Trophy Life.

Former ZBOTM Maurice needs a trophy for their creative album title, ‘Young People With Faces.’  Don’t we all have faces?  Profound.

Maurice is on tour playing all sorts of groovy cities.

Finally, a song from yet another former ZBOTM, Franco.  Franco used the Spinal Tap thing for their ep title, ‘This Is Franco.’  The song I featured, “Forever” was selected by the CBC Radio’s BC Almanac as a theme song.  How cultured of them.

Just feeling nostalgic for some of the old tunes from the first run of CRC back in the winter of 2005 and spring/summer of 2006.  It was very hard to cut this show down to just six tracks.  I hope there is something there in that set that you’ll love.

Next week will be #49 and it’ll be new music once again.  I have a great song from Adam at Sonic 102.9 in the chute and I think Lindsey in Winnipeg is toying with the idea of sending a dispatch from the Fly Ridden City.

For episode #50 I am not sure what to do to celebrate?  Maybe a best of ’09 (so far) or listener picks?  I don’t know if I have enough listeners for a listeners pick, but maybe I’ll try that and if I don’t get enough requests, I’ll flesh it out.

Then #51 will be a project as I attempt to uncover some old audio from the original “Morning After Show.”  I *had* some old cassettes floating around from sporadic shows.  I didn’t do a very good job of archiving anything back then because honestly, I didn’t think I’d be on the radio for 10 years… but it is the 10 year anniversary of my first radio show, and I want to find some old clips to share and maybe play some of the old indie rock from the time (Dead Model Shoot anyone?).  I do know that one of my original mini-discs of “imaging” went missing pretty soon after I moved to Victoria and the other one I think has also wandered by now.  That is kinda sad.
Whatever, I’d use what I got and see if any of it is still funny and make it a special CRC #51.

Capital Rock City #47 / The Laundronauts, The Racoons, Saul

Had a lot of fun crafting this weeks local rocker show for TheZone dot F-M.  I had to wheel out the record player and even used the old Denon CD cart machine.  My mic sounds off, I think someone came into the studio the other day and fiddled with the EQ.  BWOAR Stupid gremlins! I didn’t catch it till after we were done, and this is the one take special, so it had to fly.

Matt from the Racoons was back in town visiting his Mom and sister Jane.  Jane (and Alix) came over on the weekend and helped Corj and I sort out the bedroom and closet for some spring cleaning.  She had in her hot little hand the new racoons EP.  I had to have one.  So I asked Matt on his way to the 3PM ferry to hop into the Capital Rock City studio.

We talk about nerdy music stuff, The national and how great they are AND it is committed to tape, Matt said he’d perform at Coral and my wedding.

oh, and it turns out I was sharing emails with Dave from Saul.  Dave from the band emailed me needing some radio jibber jabber for a song on their upcoming album. Fun.  So you’ll hear a wee taste of the Zone Afternoon Show on the new Saul when it comes out.

That’s a podcast.  I hope you like it.  I want to drag JP Maurice into the studio sometime and I got a Facebook message from Katie Sly the other day.  She has a new band and I’d love to invite her down when they have a demo to share.  Word on the street is that Jets Overhead have a new record out in the Spring too!

Still hammering By A Thread for an interview and my lead on Chixdiggit ran cold.. sadness.  What else?  Maybe some more music from Edmonton?  Adam Thompson might make a future appearanc on the show with a group called The Faunts and I have been talking to Lindsay in Winnipeg about a contribution from her, so we’ll see.
