BOITANO! What did you do? This is why breweries in Victoria can’t have nice things.
Many moons ago, Phillips Brewery, the Pride of Esquimalt, was kindly persuaded by a Vancouver Brewer to change the name of the very popular Blue Truck beer to Blue Buck.
It was a sad time in the history of Victoria, but like generations past, we moved on. Yet the indecencies continue. Sara P and Boitano were invited to the Phillips for a Fringe Festival Party. Sara would not confirm exactly how many IPAs Boitano had in his belly, but the man himself admitted… a “few.” FYI… If you are ever pulled over by a cop and he asks, “have you had anything to drink tonight?” You never answer, “a couple,” or “a few” unless you enjoy having your car towed. You need to give an actual number… I learned that from a Vancouver City Cop… right…
So Boitano drinks a couple and then has to use the washroom and BAM! Runs through the new Blue Buck robotic mascot and completely murders it! Will it ever end for Matt Phillips?
Boitano has this to say for himself: I bet the Blue Buck was already broken when I LIGHTLY bumped it and it fell! Either way…I’m sorry Matt Phillips! – @Boitano913

Talking alcohol, yesterday the twittersphere barfed when Rod Phillips (no relation to Matt) posted on his twitter an unbelievable deal. Be one of the first 50 people to re-tweet his post and you could purchase a bottle of wine for just two bucks!
You know that mantra, “if its too good to be true, it probably isn’t true?” Well throw that shit out the window, because last night, I drank a bottle of $2 Spanish wine! Then I finished off an old bottle I had kicking around… and drank a beer. Huzzah to a mid week drunk! Thanks Rod.

I stayed up way too late last night listening to music, and this morning woke up way too early. They are finally building sidewalks in my neightbourhood (huzzah) but for a few weeks at the end of the summer, some early wake ups for me.
Getting up early was good, I had an interview with BCIT for the degree program I want into. Education is a bizarre industry. I have to apply, jump through hoops and basically beg to write them a cheque. Maybe not so different than the nightclub business or Apple computers… but still, seems weird.
Needless to say, i rocked that interview so now Coral and I will need to decide if BCIT’s Bachelor of Technology is a better bet than Applied Communications (or whatever they call it now) from Royal Roads… or maybe a third option… or maybe the forth option, Cooking School!
I think I like BCITs the best, because it is a management AND technology degree. Those two skills are things I could use in broadcasting or else where. learning how to talk to gooder and writing press releases? Not so much.
The advantage of Royal Roads might be that I can finish sooner if I work like crazy steroided ant.
What I have been the most excited about lately is thinking about three business ideas that I have.
What I want to do… maybe after the wedding, is brew my own root beer and create a brand and sell my root beer. back in maybe 2002, while slaving away at Starbucks, I got it in my head to brew root beer. I bought some books on home brewing, and even some bottles, buckets and general kit to try and brew some… but life threw some curve balls (and I ran out of money), then I moved to Victoria. I put all the brew equipment in the storage of my apartment in Fernwood… and promptly lost it all. Except for the books on how to brew and some recipes.
Lately I have had to vision to do it again. My holy grail would be a very dry, alcoholic root beer… mmm, it should be possible. But there is all sorts of stuff that I could put in my brew. The fun would be creating a product that is good, then seeing if I can sell it!
What I might actually do is start a mobile disco business… DJing weddings and parties and the like.
What I have a fantasy of doing, is throwing one off dinning events. Finding a nice outdoor site and hiring or renting the equipment and having an outdoor dinner. Finding a kitchen space not being used, a local chef and booking a one off dinner party. Finding an ingredient and designing a dinner based around it. Finding a supplier or industrial space, dressing it up and serving dinner n the site. Fun, unique, delicious dining experiences… I might even get a chance to cook some stuff! or at least learn from the chefs.
My friend works for a local catering company and it sounds like they could really use some energy and more importantly business, so the opportunity might be there.
That is a few things I have been thinking about lately on top of my usual brain swirls of music, babies, wedding plannings, broadcasting and podcasting.

Daniel Wesley came by my radio show today to talk and perform.
Man did we have some times. We talked about his new self titled record coming out in October, having the chance to take some time to record in a professional studio with a producer. That producer being Mr. Dave Genn. Dave smokes a lot of pot and his wife is Tamara Taggart… and Tamara was on Regis last Friday, but Daniel PVR’d it and watched it Sunday. Good times. Then he played his new single “Pilgramage” and another new one. Enjoy.

That’s right sports rock fans, its time to put the hooks in a brand new Capital Rock City. The march to 1,000 weekly downloads continues and it can happen if you do your part by:
a) sharing a link or this blog with a friend(s) on your social network
b) subscribing to Capital Rock City on iTunes
c) and leaving a comment or rate Capital Rock City on iTunes
Thank you, please download away: Capital Rock City #70

DJ Notes
01) Saul – “Its Never Enough”
02) Hollydene – “Friday, I’m In Love”
03) Sunday Buckets – “Man in the Moon”
04) Day In The Life – “Where’s Your Imagination”

OK Saul fans, is it time that David got that second armed all tattoo’d up or what?
In 1992, The Cure released their 9th studio album, Wish. One of their most endearing singles from that album was a track called “Friday I’m In Love.” Hollydene covered it.
Last Saturday, I went to a hall party at the James Bay Rugby Club. All the fine lovelies running around the party had the Sunday Bucket’s album blaring. Great album. The song I chose this week for CRC is one of their slower cuts, but it stood out for me when I placed the record on while getting ready for my radio show the other day.
The final track from this week’s Capital Rock City comes a band I think is a Jesus Rock Band? They have that Christian vibe about them, the song I played on Capital Rock City is about not trying to figure stuff out… and having faith. Sure, whatever helps you sleep. DITL sent me a music video for this song. Very DIY. The band gets top marks for tenacity, but if rock stardom or heck… even heavy play on Christian radio is their goal, then they’ll want to think about putting more effort (or hiring someone) to record and edit their videos and music. Coupled with the fact that I wanted to find their website to link for you and couldn’t. or find the video on youtube for you to enjoy and couldn’t means… I dunno… that is just weird. Change the band name to something more unique? Get your friends to hit your sites more so it pushes up on the google machine?
Final verdict on DITL, rough around the edges…
oh, found the video.
That’s all I got. Off on a little vacation next week so CRC 71 will be a day or two late. Thank you for downloading the show and taking a minute or two to read my ramblings.
Go with yourself.

The march to 1,000 weekly downloads of Capital Rock City continues with… uh, you downloading my podcast? But it really kicks into gear when you unleash the social media revolution and share my work with your friends and ex-boyfriends.
Be groovy, download: Capital Rock City #69 TODAY!

DJ Notes:
01) Saul – “Wasteland Anthem”
02) The Paper Cranes – “The Cavalier”
03) Lizzie and Simon – “Mermaids and Kings”
04) Cage The Elephant – “Back Against The Wall (live)”
The more I listen to Saul’s latest work, the more I am impressed by the chunky fullness of the sounds. I do have a soft spot in my heart for riff-rock (I grew up in the suburbs of Vancouver jamming out CFOX) and this music kinda reminds me of Chevelle. I don’t know what will propel Saul to an opening slot of a Hinder concert, being a “rock” band can be a hard row to sow with a song about cheating on your girlfriend or drugs (of hopefully both). I am not sure if I’ve heard that break-out single from Saul yet… but maybe after a couple more listens. A few weeks back I jammed out a track called “Never Enough” and that song had a nice hook, so maybe I’ll need to revisit that cut or maybe a couple cuts for CRC #70. If you have some thoughts, I’d always love to hear them, in the comment section of my blog (or http://www.thezone.fm/jeremy readers can email me jeremy@thezone.fm).
I have a minor obsession with the CBC show The Tudors. I just discovered the program recently, and outside of the news and hockey, its the only reason I visit the Ceeb these days. The King in The Tudors is such a dick, but all the lady’s of the court are smoking hot, so I can see why the dude was always fucking anything in a dress and not managing his realm very effectively.
This attitude would eventually… well a century later, boil over to the First English Civil War. Supporters of the then King Charles would be called cavaliers. A cavalier is either, depending on which end of the pike you were standing, bold, dashing, religious, loyal, Calvary men of the King or… godless, drinking, frivolous men. I’ll need to have another listen to the Paper Cranes cut to hear who Ryan is singing about. I did like the prayer of one Cavalier before battle: “O Lord, Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget Thee, do not forget me.”
Liz Beattie sent me a track to feature on my podcast this week, “Mermaids and Kings.” its alright, I like “Wherever You Go” from last week’s show so much better.

The show ends with a clip from chit-chat/live performance with Cage The Elephant. The song they played is called “Back Against The Wall.”
That’s all I got, thank you for downloading my podcast and please take a moment to find it in iTunes music store. You could rate it (highly I hope) leave a comment, subscribe to it… sure. And if you liked the show, maybe you’ll tell a friend about it.

thanks Two for the awesome pictures. *all pictures are from Two in this post.
Monday night had a trifecta (I don’t know if that is a word or not), Monday night had three great modern rock bands invade our Island for a show at The Royal Theatre.
Before the concert all three bands came by The Zone to hang out and The Silversun Pickups and Cage The Elephant made it to The ZAS.
Here is the audio of their interviews/live performances.

Check out the stream of the event at http://thezone.fm/jeremy
we had some technical issues during the Silversun Pickups of our broadcast feed (which is what this recording is of) so the first couple songs are heavily distorted which is a real shame. The end of the performance is decent.
The interview with SSPU was a little more awkward as we couldn’t hear each other too wel and were on a stage with everyone, so it takes me a second to get comfortable… so yeah, first half of the interview is a little weak and I apologize for that, but our second talk about the recoding process half way through the set is a little bit better. Brian gets all James Hetfield at the performance and away we go. Brian is singing/guitars and Nikki is playing bass.
They perform four songs:
01) “Growing Old is Getting Old” (worst of the audio)
02) “Panic Switch”
talk about recording/song craftsmanship/drilling holes in pianos
03) “Substitution”
04) “Lazy Eye” (best of the audio)
After the show on Monday, you might have found the SSPU playing bubble hockey in the Games Room of the Strathcona Hotel.
Check out the stream of the event at http://www.thezone.fm/jeremy
Matt Schultz and I talk about who he likes better, SSPU or Manchester Orchestra, what is better? a tour bus or hotel room, what are some of his favourite bands, who is he singing about in the song “In One Ear” and what is the best part of the great state of Kentucky.
I thought the interview was alright, but later that night at the Royal, I ran into Matt (he was hanging out drinking and watching the other bands in the seats with all us plebes) he was very apologetic.
After the show the groups was off to drink at local peeler bar The Fox. (and Manchester Orchestra was at Smiths for pints).
The band performed a couple songs with brother Brad and guitarist Lincoln.
set:
01) “Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked”
02) “Back Against the Wall”
I hope you enjoy.

Me and actor/director/producer/writer Eli Roth are besties! True story, I interviewed him today about his new film ‘Inglourious Bastards,’ Brad Pitt, horror movies, how he single-handily propelled Lionsgate Studio to insane profitability,I pitched a movie idea AND recommended he check out the Silversun Pickups tonight Vancouver… all in five minutes. Good times. You should have a listen.

This is pretty cool, The Silversun Pickups are on their way to Victoria for a Zone Show tonight and included a picture on their twitter of the Ferry ride.
Yesterday, when I was on the ferry, back from our Kings of Leon concert adventure, we saw whales! no rock stars, but man, there were so many whales out there on the water.
KOL was a fun shit show. Coral, Alyx, Gord and I bee-lined downtown to this little pub called Dix. Dix serves up its own micro-brew, Red Truck. Why do we know and love Red Truck in Victoria? Because that fine brewery sued our friend Matt Phillips and made him stop brewing his Blue Truck. (I mean calling it “Blue Truck,” he still brews it as Blue Buck).
What ever, I forgive and I order and you know what? Good, no Blue Truck, but a quality micro-brew at a decent price consider we were in the tourist ghetto on Vancouver. Prices were actually pretty decent at Dix. James and Holly showed up with James’ brother and James let us know you can eat peanuts by the bucket in Dix and toss the shells on the floor Big Bad Johns style. Fun.
Coral and I wobbled over to GM Place after the Whigs, a couple more beers and KOL hit the stage jamming out one of my fave tracks, “Be Somebody.”
Txts from that night:
me: they totally played sex is on fire!
james: I got crabs!
me: Hey remember that time holly gave me the aids?
James: Remeber that time they played sex is on fire and I got a total semi
They basically jammed out all the hits, good set, humble guys, loud crowd then back to Coquitlam for some John B. Pub.
My sister, her BF and my brother Matt joined us and we slammed back some dirt cheap Molson. The cover band asked for requests and I said, “KING OF LEON, SEX ON FIRE!”
The band said, “only if you sing it!”
OK. Um, my sister has the footage somewhere.
The next day was a sunny one and we headed to the water park in Port Moody which is one of the finest family parks I’ve ever seen. I think I have a new mission from god, and its to build a water park in Esquimalt.

right, dreams aside. Good times.
Go with yourself.
