Thank you for finding my blog.  If this is your first time visiting I would like to invite you to check out my weekly podcast called Capital Rock City.  Capital Rock City is a weekly audio podcast I create that features some of the fine music of Victoria and points in and around the capital.

Please Download: Capital Rock City #63

If you enjoy the show, please consider sharing the link with a friend and subscribing to the podcast.  You can subscribe by using this RSS feed or by searching ‘capital rock city’ in the iTunes store.

Now lets get to it.

DJ Notes

01) Mother Mother – “Hay Loft”
02) Paper Cranes – “Black Centipedes”
03) Great White Shark – “Long to Tell You”
04) Everybody Left – “Get Used”

The show begins with a taste of an interview I did with Mother Mother lead sing Ryan Guldemon.  We’ll get a couple chances to see this Quadra Island native (now living in Vancouver) on August 15th at Cumberland’s Big Time Out Festival and then here in the city in late September at Rifflandia.  Ryan and I mostly talk about how I completely fail at interpreting their music.  good times.

The Paper Cranes have a new record called ‘Chivalry’s Dead’ and they be celebrating its release with a pair of CD release parties.  July 17th here in Victoria at Lucky Bar (Racoons in support) and then the following night, July 18th in Vancouver at The Biltmore.

I got an email from my man crush Eric Thompson at A TV.  Eric has a son and he is the drummer in the band Great White Shark.  AND it turns out I know the lead singer.  He was in the band Something Better which I have featured before on Capital Rock City (I thinkon the podcast I make a mistake and confused my notes.  I said that Great White Shark was Everybody Left… and that is wrong, they were Something Better).

Finally, a song from the band Everybody Left.  What a groovy track.

That’ll do it for this week’s Capital Rock City.  Thank you for spending your time exploring new indie rock with me and I hope you’ll not be a stranger and introduce yourself in the comment section and make a point to subscribe to the podcast.

Go with yourself.

Download The Zone Afternoon Show: Zoner Rips Out His Roommate’s Toenail (mp3)

A bizarre moment today on the Zone Phone.  Tyler called into the show to request Phoenix’s “1901.”  He wanted to send it out to his roommate Cynthia because in mere moments, he was going to rip her toenail off her foot… and the savage medieval surgery happened live on the show.

Its Tuesday, so that means time for another poignant episode of Capital Rock City from me and your friends at The Zone @ 91-3.

Come Get Some: Capital Rock City #62

If you love listening to the show as much as I like jamming it out every Tuesday, please share this link with a friend or on your social network feed.  Have Capital Rock City delivered to your computer every week automatically by using this handy RSS feed or searching for ‘Capital Rock City’ in the iTunes store podcast section.  Thank you.

DJ Notes

01) Franco – “Date With Destiny”
02) Oh Snap – “Involuntary”
03) Blue Violets – “You Said”
04) Jets Overhead – “Heading For Nowhere”

I didn’t get too much new music this week, so instead of scraping something together I decided to reflect on some of the ZBOTM’s from 2009 (so far).

I started with February’s band, Franco.  Cruising their MySpace page, I saw they played a CD release show last week in Vancouver… in support?  The band Missing Starla!  SWA?

Now I hope I don’t tell this story wrong, Irene or Derrick or Paul or whoever knows it can correct it but the gist is this:

Many moons ago, my Buddhist friend Irene had a cat named Starla.  She (or the cat at least) lived in the West End of Vancouver.  Somehow Starla JUMPED off the balcony as cats are wont to do and went missing.

Irene was sad.  She had a graphic designer friend make up some visually stunning “Missing Starla” posters and Irene went to work covering the city in missing cat posters.  By all accounts, the posters were very eye catching and you could not live in the West End at the time and miss them.

Weeks later, a sickly but living Starla was found and nursed back to health.

Time marches on, and Irene sees posters up around the West End advertising an upcoming indie rocker show featuring, “Missing Starla!”

That is where the Vancouver band Missing Starla got their name.

And part of me thinks Irene named the cat Starla after a Smashing Pumpkins song?  hmmm

Wow, a couple days late with the DJ notes.  bad radio DJ, bad!

Please tuck into: Capital Rock City #61

I continue my march to 1,000 weekly downloads on Capital Rock City.  Webmeister Bud is still on mat leave celebrating the birth of his daughter!  Huzzah Bud!  So I don’t know the stats, the last I checked it was in the neighbourhood of a 100 a week.  Not bad, but as you can see, lots of work ahead of me to get the podcast to a sustainable audience.  You can do your part in supporting the fine music of Victoria by sharing the link of the podcast with a friend(s) or posting on your social network (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace).

You can also subscribe to the podcast, two ways, RSS Feed or in the iTunes Store podcast section.  Just search for ‘Capital Rock City’ and don’t forget to rate and comment please.

You’ll also find Capital Rock City at Raised on Indie!

Sales pitch aside, let’s get to it.

DJ Notes

01) Jell – “Watch Yourself”
02) Listening Party – “Pachina”
03) Goodbye Beatdown – “The Grudge”
04) The Matinee – “The Road”

Jell sent me a link for their new music video.  Pretty decent.  Have a look.

I was surprised to see that Jell has actually made a few videos for their songs.  All a very good DIY quality.  Jell’s Youtube Page

Here is yet another from Jon Middleton’s Listening Party.  This song is a little more lo-fi than the last LP song I featured.  Not sure what I think about it.  i like the quirkyness of it.

The Listening Party will be in Duncan on June 27th and in Vancouver opening for one of my favourite bands, Japandroids, at Richards on August 7th.

The Goodbye Beatdown are playing Zoner Gina’s party on July 4th.  You’re totally invited (no seriously, email me if you want to go…).

The show ends with The Matinee.  A band I have known since highschool.  they’ve changed their name like a hundred times (well three) and this latest incarnation has a slight country/folky twang.  Matt sent me a slate of new tunes and I felt that “the Road” was by far the strongest.

Thank you for finding Capital Rock City, let’s do it again sometime shall we?

Go with yourself.

DJ Notes

01) theset – “Echohead”
02) November Rising – “Origin”
03) The Listening Party – “Before the Night”
04) James Kasper – “Breezy”

***

Capital Rock City #60 has lots of great new music this week.  Well new, to me.  However I start the show with one off theset’s Neveroddoreven album.  The song is called “Echohead” and I like it because I recently had a chance to see the video.  Superb video.

November Rising is a band I saw many years ago?  I can’t remember but it was sometime ago and it was at Steamers, so it must have been in the distant past.  My friend Justin from Station House Pub told me about the band.  Very epic.

Jon Middleton of Jon & Roy fame has a new side project, The Listening Party.  The Listening Party loves their drums and they sing about summer.

James Kasper is back with some new music, so I sampled my favourite.  I like “Breezy’s” nice build to a furious jam at the end.

Thank you for downloading.  Please share this link with your friends.

Go with yourself.

Click and Listen to: Capital Rock City #59

Thank you for finding Capital Rock City from The Zone dot Fm slash Jeremy, not too much in the new music department this week and I have little time for DJ notes… so here’s the set. yeesh, not really selling the sizzle with that opening pitch. Trust me, it sounds better than I can describe.

DJ Notes

01) Crown the Wolf – “Primer Ride”
02) Japandroids – “Sovereignty”
03) Jets Overhead – “No Nations”
04) Acres of Lions – “Entertainment”

Sorry I don’t have more time for DJ Notes… its 3PM, time to make some radio magic on The Zone @ 91-3.  Here is what I wrote on the RSS Feed:

CRC 59 begins with the dramz. Did Pride Tiger’s bass player quit moments before their show this past Friday? I dunno if that’s true or what, but I do know Crown The Wolf showed up and did their thing. Japandroids from Vancouver have a trend of canceling shows whenever I am able to go see them. I don’t take it personally, I keep on keeping on. Jets Overhead is the Zone Band of the Month for June! and back from China! Nice. And the show ends with one of my fave Vic rockers, Acres of Lions. if you love the show as much as I do, please share a link with a friend and you can find out more always at http://www.thezone.fm/jeremy (Tuesday, June 02, 2009)

DJ Notes

01) Doc Currie – “Eastern Shore”
02) Aegis Fang – “Ghetto Man”
03) Saul – “Too Quick To Judge”
04) The Racoons – “Secret Song”

I met the boys in Doc Currie last week at Logan’s opening for The CFC (not to be confused with the Couples for Christ). DC is just two just guys doing the drums and guitar thing.  Lots of audio weirdness.  Two was thinking they sounded like Modest Mouse, I disagreed and pulled some threads of Japanadroids out.  But listening to “Eastern Shore” again on Capital Rock City… it is a little more noisy and experimental.

Aegis Fang!  Lets do it, this Thursday at Sugar for Beats and Babes 2!

BeatsandBabes2

The good kids in Saul asked me a couple weeks ago if they could use a clip form the Zone Afternoon Show in an intro to a song on their new record.  I said, “yuppers!”  And now you’re hearing it on Capital Rock City.  man, those were some good oranges.  I still remember them.  And to tie CRC 57 in to The Paper Cranes, Miranda went to Save-On and bought some oranges too.

The Racoons are on tour right now… Ontario maybe?  They’ll be back in Victoria for a show at Sugar on June 12th.  new ep, “Islomania” is out in Early June as well.

The “secret song” at the end of the “I’d Rather Be Sailing with” ep is a song that lead singer Matt describes as their “National sounding song.”  The National are taking FOREVER to follow up Boxer, so the Racoons will have to scratch that itch for me.

That’s all I got.  Thank you for downloading Capital Rock City.  If you like the show, please share the fine music of Victoria with your friends and pass the link on your social networks.

Go with yourself.

02) The Blue Violets – “You Said”
03) Jason Cook – “Effin Bronco”
04) Josh Van Leeuwen Sparrow – “Fever in Our Souls and Fire In Our Bones”

***

Here is Vince from the Yummy Mummies!

and hey… is Josh Van Leeuwen the same guy that fronted The Counting Heartbeats?  * turns out he is! And I got an email from Josh saying that his performance name is Joshua Sparrow as it has a little better zip to it and not to be confused with the Van Leeuwen of A Perfect Circle fame.

Please Download and Subscribe to: Capital Rock City #55

Thank you for taking a moment to find my podcast.  if you like the show, please subscribe to the podcast from the iTunes podcast section or use the RSS feed.  And most importantly, please share the link with a friend.

DJ Notes:

01) Jets Overhead – “No Nations”
02) Way to Go Einstein – “Insensate”
03) Immaculate Machine – “Sound the Alarms”
04) Japandroids – “Young Hearts Spark Fires”
05) Flawed By Design – “Exit Strategy”
06) Hollydene – “Enemy”

***

That’s all I got for now… I’ll flesh out the notes later with some commentary and links when I have more time.  Right now I have to hop on the radio and do my show.

Jets Overhead are likely somewhere in China right now spreading the Canadian Rock and Rock ethos to a billion people.  New Jets record is called No Nations and we’ll get our chance at it on June 2nd.

Way to Go Einstein messaged me on Facebook after noticing Fake Shark – Real Zombie on CRC 54.  This band is also from the lower mainland but I was like, yup…send me some music!  They have a bit of a Radiohead thing going on.  I find the song to be very melodic and pleasant to listen to.

Trolling around Pitchfork, I read a review of Victoria’s Immaculate Machine that was not great.  Pitchfork was rather “meh” on the whole High on Jackson Hill which would be fighting words of Shaynebo Bright reads the review (he LOVES Immaculate Machine).

Read: Pitchfork’s Review of Immaculate Machine
The Read: Pitchfork’s Review of Japandroids

Pitchfork might not like their accessible Victorian pop, but they lurves them some Terminal City fuzzy lo-fi rock.  Japandroids have an interesting sound that maybe reminds me of Vic due Bloody Wilma?  Maybe a little?  I should get some Bloody Wilma for the podcast.  They also remind me a bit of that band Fucked Up.  Right, the song I picked for CRC 55 was the one the reviewer in Pitchfork highlighted as the best… so if you didn’t “get it” then maybe Japandroids are not for you… and in the 6 degrees of the Paper Cranes which CRC has turned into… Japandroids are on the same record label as The Paper Cranes.  neat.

Japandroids
May 20th @ Lucky Bar

I met one of the guys in Flawed By Design a couple Tuesdays ago at The Clubhouse.  He was friends with this guy I know named Brenden.  We jibber jabbered… one thing leads to another and it turns out as is generally the case… he’s in a band, I have a radio show, we should be friends.  An MP3 was sent and I really like it.  Maybe a *little* dated with the screamo style, but i miss screamo so I’ll let it slide and give the song a thumb up!

Ended the show this week with another strong cut from Hollydene.  Still don’t know too much abouyt the kids in t he Hollydene, we recently became BFF on Facebook, so maybe over time… I’ll learn their 5 favourite records on a desert island and their ABCs off Facebook notes and it’ll be like we went to high school together and used to party every week down by the river (no really, in high school, I used to party down by the river).

The march to 1,000 continues so please take a moment to help me and share a link for the podcast with a friend.  Subscribing on iTunes or by RSS feed is huge too.  Thank you so much for finding the show.  And I am always looking for new music so if you’re in a band or have a favourite indie rocker you want to share, please email me at jeremy@thezone.fm .

OK, good talk.

Go with yourself.
