The Times Colonist asked, “should we invite him to Victoria?”  Heck yes we should.

Phoenix rocked Vancouver the other night, and it turns out I missed quite the party!

Huzzah!

first this.

That is an end of the year high-light reel hit by the Pride of Port McNeil. Just an amazing freight train right through the Blackhawk captain Jonathan Toews.  The only sad points about the hit…

I like Toews, he’s a great hockey player, why couldn’t it have been Kane?
AND the devastating hit then created a mint scoring chance for the ‘Nucks that was whistled because the Hawks threw a tantrum after the text-book hit.  boo.

Still, Nucks win, the hit is amazing and it’ll live on Youtube for all time… or until Youtube gets bought out and the servers go dark.

Huzzah!

I did make it to the gym today and for once in my life, I ran into a business that was interested in catering to my needs for a cost that works.

Indeed Odyssey Fitness is 24 Hours.  That in of itself was a victory, but the icing for me is that the fee is just $50 a month, no long term contract, no extra fees, a month free and I can come at 2 AM when no one is there and not have to worry about some fitness instructor “selling” any “programs.”

The lady Joanne was sweet, I told her what I wanted, the fees were simple to understand and I signed up!  Heck, I might go after my DJ performance at The Clubhouse tonight.  We’ll see, I have an early wake up call Friday morning.

Next, and keep in mind, I like the Olympics (I am wearing my Olympic sweater right now AAMOF)… but what the fuck is going on?

Maybe I need to send a resume to the Provincial Liberals because how they thought this story would go over well with Johnny Q. Taxpayer is beyond me.

B.C. Spends $1 Million on Olympic Tickets for MLAs

This is how the meeting would have played out if I were in the room when this idea was hatched.

Government Cabinet Minister: “I think we should write a cheque for $1 million dollars of tax payer money to buy premium tickets to Olympic events.”

Jeremy: “no, don’t be retarded.”

then I would send them an invoice for $500,000 and Bob’s your uncle.

That no one stopped to say, hey wait a minute,” is what’s scary.

AND, why would any government official even have to buy tickets anyways?  Shouldn’t they just flash a badge and walk in?  We already paid for the games?  If Premier Gordon Campbell actually has to “buy” an Olympic ticket, then truly, the IOC is fisting us.

Outrageous… I mean not as outrageous as the BILLION with a ‘B’ price tag for secrutity for two weeks… but still, pretty scary.

and because no-one can do anything right in this world except for me.

This is embarrassing.

Victoria Mayor reneges on snow-shovelling bet

A week or so ago, Victoria and Regina entered into some sort of civic pride bet to see which Provincial capital could raise more food donations for the local food bank.  Regina spanked us (already embarrassed).  The bet called for the loser (Victoria’s Dean Fortin) to fly out to Regina to shovel some snow.

Now the guy isn’t going to go?  because of the cost of the flight and uhhh… carbon emissions?

Bike there dude.  You don’t make a bet, publicly, on behalf of our city, LOSE, then renege on the deal.  C’est dommage.

see, now I am in a bad mood, I better scroll back to the top of this blog post and watch the Willie Mitchell hit again.

oh, I totally got blogged about by Mixcloud! fun. Go with yourself.

A day late a buck short… I’m writing the report… oh wow, Blink 182?  really?

Capital Rock City #71 is a couple days late, and I apologize to you passionate CRCers out there who wait breathlessly each and every week for your fix of some fine BC rock & roll.  Corj and I took Mads on a trip of the interior, then yesterday was just way too busy and I was sick and blah blah blah… yeah.

Today is the day, and I thank you for finding Capital Rock City and downloading the show.

Download: Capital Rock City #71

DJ Notes:

01) Vince Vaccaro – “Costa Rica (acoustic)”
02) A Trophy Life – “Samonite (I was Way Off)”
03) TV Heart Attack – “A/O”
04) Daniel Wesley – “Pilgramidge (live on The ZAS)”

Vince Vaccaro crafted a video for an alternate recording of one my favourite VV cuts, “Costa Rica.”  Whenever I play this song for someone they become a Vince fan.  Both my sister and Coral love the song.  The video is an excellent DIY creation and well worth about 3 minutes of your time.

The only thing Vince… I noticed a shot of Vancouver radio station The Peak 100.5, but no clips of The Zone?  next video I’m sure.

Our September Band of the Month ’round these parts is a group called A Trophy Life.  You can hit the Band of the Month PAGE on THEZONEDOTFM and download some songs for totally free man.

TV Heart Attack is a Vancouver band that I have featured on the show before.  Peak (and former Zone) music director James Sutton turned me on to the group.  They recently competed in the Peak’s Performance Project where they were a finalist.

TVHA’s new record is called Lost in the Sway and is available now at finer record stores or on iTunes.

On October 20th I will have been married for 9 days AND I’ll be able to get my paws on the brand spanking new Daniel Wesley record.  Before taking off on holidays last week, Daniel came by the Zone and recorded a song called “Pilgrimage.”

The shows today starts with a fine taste of the group Holy Fuck.  I love this group with features the dude from the band By Devine Right!  remember them?

Holy Fuck is going to be in Victoria for the Rifflandia Festival and as luck would have it, they are playing on the only night I have free that weekend to hit a rock show!  Rifflandia looks amazing this year and I wish I could check out more shows… I know a few Morning After Show readers would be interested in Sam Bradley yup, he’s playing too all you R Pattinson fans.

Next week on CRC 72 I am hoping to have the boys of Saul in the studio.  Steve of the band Rotterdam and his set of Vic metal for CRC 73 and then maybe Two and I will be ready for the special live acoustic CRC 74?  maybe?

That’s all I got, thank you for downloading Capital Rock City and if you like the show, please share it with a friend.

Go with yourself.

Silversun

This is pretty cool, The Silversun Pickups are on their way to Victoria for a Zone Show tonight and included a picture on their twitter of the Ferry ride.

Yesterday, when I was on the ferry, back from our Kings of Leon concert adventure, we saw whales!  no rock stars, but man, there were so many whales out there on the water.

KOL was a fun shit show.  Coral, Alyx, Gord and I bee-lined downtown to this little pub called Dix.  Dix serves up its own micro-brew, Red Truck.  Why do we know and love Red Truck in Victoria?  Because that fine brewery sued our friend Matt Phillips and made him stop brewing his Blue Truck. (I mean calling it “Blue Truck,” he still brews it as Blue Buck).

What ever, I forgive and I order and you know what?  Good, no Blue Truck, but a quality micro-brew at a decent price consider we were in the tourist ghetto on Vancouver.  Prices were actually pretty decent at Dix.  James and Holly showed up with James’ brother and James let us know you can eat peanuts by the bucket in Dix and toss the shells on the floor Big Bad Johns style.  Fun.

Coral and I wobbled over to GM Place after the Whigs, a couple more beers and KOL hit the stage jamming out one of my fave tracks, “Be Somebody.”

Txts from that night:

me: they totally played sex is on fire!

james: I got crabs!

me: Hey remember that time holly gave me the aids?

James: Remeber that time they played sex is on fire and I got a total semi

They basically jammed out all the hits, good set, humble guys, loud crowd then back to Coquitlam for some John B. Pub.

My sister, her BF and my brother Matt joined us and we slammed back some dirt cheap Molson.  The cover band asked for requests and I said, “KING OF LEON, SEX ON FIRE!”

The band said, “only if you sing it!”

OK.  Um, my sister has the footage somewhere.

The next day was a sunny one and we headed to the water park in Port Moody which is one of the finest family parks I’ve ever seen.  I think I have a new mission from god, and its to build a water park in Esquimalt.

right, dreams aside.  Good times.

DJ Notes

01) Funk Vigilante – “On Top of the World”
02) Goodbye Beatdown – “Feel Your Pain”
03) Lizzie and Simon – “Wherever You Go”
04) Black Hat Villain – “Rain or Shine”

Funk Vigilante reminds me of my old vigilante hat.  Many moons ago when I was snot-nosed suburban hipster, I went to the Warped Tour in Vancouver.  During the show I found this trucker hat (remember when those were so hawt!) that had the top cut off so it looked like a real D-bag styled golf vizer thing.  Written in sharpy marker was the word “vigilante.”  Cool.

Funk Vigilante describes themselves as:

The album is called “Civil Disobedience”  it’s like one of those hot lava burritos, blended up, and poured right into your listening hole.

which is much better than anything I could write.

The Goodbye Beatdown are a Vancouver band that is increasingly spending more and more time visiting us here in Victoria.  They’ll once again be here for a show on August 20th at Lucky Bar.

Liz Beattie was (maybe still is?) the bass player for Machina.  Remember that band?  Lately I notice she performs as The Liz Beattie band or on MySpace as Lizzie and Simon.  Simon is the keyboard player for Maurice and together they make some pretty indie pop.  Cute attack!

I end the show this week with Langfordians, Black Hat Villain.  You’ll get a chance to experience their post-grungy sounds live at The Station House Pub on Saturday, August 15th when they suppoert the Armchair Cynics.

Thank you for trying something new with your music and discovering some great Victoria rock & roll.

Go with yourself

Please do the right thing, download: Capital Rock City #66

This crazy fun summertime is doing a number on my blog hits which I can only imagine is damaging my March to 1,000 weekly CRC downloads… that said, if you are one of the fine few finding this website when really you should be at the beach, thank you and maybe take a second to subscribe to the podcast on either iTunes or by RSS feed.

DJ Notes

01) The Paper Cranes – “Chivalry’s Dead”
02) Japandroids – “Crazy/Forever”
03) Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band – “Albatross, Albatross, Albatross”
04) Current Swell – “Red Shag Carpet”

No better way to get right to it, then to go to Paper Cranes female half, Miranda’s blog:

The gist of it: our label Unfamiliar Records has called out Factor for giving grant money to only successful bands who don’t “need” it. Large amounts of money going to groups like Nickleback and Metric.
While I agree with the sentiment and have been frustratingly rejected for multiple video and recording grants (written by professionals) we have also been approved for and relied on a couple travel grants in the past to play festivals.

I am a little worried that we will now never be able to get a grant as a result of this. It is pretty entertaining though…..

The letter has been picked up by thedailyswarm, exclaim news and the national post.

the national post
the original letter
response from metric’s manager

oh the dramz. i hope we have not been fully alienated.

I hope not either Miranda!  But I wouldn’t worry about it too much.  Grants are free money, if you get one, score, if not… then you do like countless others and work for yours.  Ryan and you are hard workers that make great music.

Huzzah!  Japandroids are making up the canceled show in Victoria. This mighty Vancouver fuzz rock group is playing Lucky Bar on Saturday, September 5th.  And they’re bringing with them, Seattle group the Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band.  I had a chance to see these guys (I think) at Sasquatch!

Finally on this weeks CRC, Zone Band of the Month, Current Swell.  Some fine summer music that is perfect for the patio.  CS is a great example of a band that makes music people like and work hard showing it.  These guys don’t really “need” a band of the month showcase, but we’re happy non-the-less here at the Zone for the chance to share their fantastic music with our audience.  The showcase tomorrow (July 30th) at Evolution Nightclub promises to be packed!  So make sure you meet up with Pol early at 9PM.

That will do it for this week…. thank you for downloading my podcast and I hope you discovered some great new music.

Go with yourself.

Thank you for finding my blog.  If this is your first time visiting I would like to invite you to check out my weekly podcast called Capital Rock City.  Capital Rock City is a weekly audio podcast I create that features some of the fine music of Victoria and points in and around the capital.

Please Download: Capital Rock City #63

If you enjoy the show, please consider sharing the link with a friend and subscribing to the podcast.  You can subscribe by using this RSS feed or by searching ‘capital rock city’ in the iTunes store.

Now lets get to it.

DJ Notes

01) Mother Mother – “Hay Loft”
02) Paper Cranes – “Black Centipedes”
03) Great White Shark – “Long to Tell You”
04) Everybody Left – “Get Used”

The show begins with a taste of an interview I did with Mother Mother lead sing Ryan Guldemon.  We’ll get a couple chances to see this Quadra Island native (now living in Vancouver) on August 15th at Cumberland’s Big Time Out Festival and then here in the city in late September at Rifflandia.  Ryan and I mostly talk about how I completely fail at interpreting their music.  good times.

The Paper Cranes have a new record called ‘Chivalry’s Dead’ and they be celebrating its release with a pair of CD release parties.  July 17th here in Victoria at Lucky Bar (Racoons in support) and then the following night, July 18th in Vancouver at The Biltmore.

I got an email from my man crush Eric Thompson at A TV.  Eric has a son and he is the drummer in the band Great White Shark.  AND it turns out I know the lead singer.  He was in the band Something Better which I have featured before on Capital Rock City (I thinkon the podcast I make a mistake and confused my notes.  I said that Great White Shark was Everybody Left… and that is wrong, they were Something Better).

Finally, a song from the band Everybody Left.  What a groovy track.

That’ll do it for this week’s Capital Rock City.  Thank you for spending your time exploring new indie rock with me and I hope you’ll not be a stranger and introduce yourself in the comment section and make a point to subscribe to the podcast.

Go with yourself.

Its Tuesday, so that means time for another poignant episode of Capital Rock City from me and your friends at The Zone @ 91-3.

Come Get Some: Capital Rock City #62

If you love listening to the show as much as I like jamming it out every Tuesday, please share this link with a friend or on your social network feed.  Have Capital Rock City delivered to your computer every week automatically by using this handy RSS feed or searching for ‘Capital Rock City’ in the iTunes store podcast section.  Thank you.

DJ Notes

01) Franco – “Date With Destiny”
02) Oh Snap – “Involuntary”
03) Blue Violets – “You Said”
04) Jets Overhead – “Heading For Nowhere”

I didn’t get too much new music this week, so instead of scraping something together I decided to reflect on some of the ZBOTM’s from 2009 (so far).

I started with February’s band, Franco.  Cruising their MySpace page, I saw they played a CD release show last week in Vancouver… in support?  The band Missing Starla!  SWA?

Now I hope I don’t tell this story wrong, Irene or Derrick or Paul or whoever knows it can correct it but the gist is this:

Many moons ago, my Buddhist friend Irene had a cat named Starla.  She (or the cat at least) lived in the West End of Vancouver.  Somehow Starla JUMPED off the balcony as cats are wont to do and went missing.

Irene was sad.  She had a graphic designer friend make up some visually stunning “Missing Starla” posters and Irene went to work covering the city in missing cat posters.  By all accounts, the posters were very eye catching and you could not live in the West End at the time and miss them.

Weeks later, a sickly but living Starla was found and nursed back to health.

Time marches on, and Irene sees posters up around the West End advertising an upcoming indie rocker show featuring, “Missing Starla!”

That is where the Vancouver band Missing Starla got their name.

And part of me thinks Irene named the cat Starla after a Smashing Pumpkins song?  hmmm

Click and Listen to: Capital Rock City #59

Thank you for finding Capital Rock City from The Zone dot Fm slash Jeremy, not too much in the new music department this week and I have little time for DJ notes… so here’s the set. yeesh, not really selling the sizzle with that opening pitch. Trust me, it sounds better than I can describe.

DJ Notes

01) Crown the Wolf – “Primer Ride”
02) Japandroids – “Sovereignty”
03) Jets Overhead – “No Nations”
04) Acres of Lions – “Entertainment”

Sorry I don’t have more time for DJ Notes… its 3PM, time to make some radio magic on The Zone @ 91-3.  Here is what I wrote on the RSS Feed:

CRC 59 begins with the dramz. Did Pride Tiger’s bass player quit moments before their show this past Friday? I dunno if that’s true or what, but I do know Crown The Wolf showed up and did their thing. Japandroids from Vancouver have a trend of canceling shows whenever I am able to go see them. I don’t take it personally, I keep on keeping on. Jets Overhead is the Zone Band of the Month for June! and back from China! Nice. And the show ends with one of my fave Vic rockers, Acres of Lions. if you love the show as much as I do, please share a link with a friend and you can find out more always at http://www.thezone.fm/jeremy (Tuesday, June 02, 2009)
